Another GM Coupe is going away!
According to the new Motor Trend the Cavalier replacement which will be out next year will be a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback only.
This is really starting to suck, why is GM killing their 2-door coupes, Sales? I see Cavalier 2-doors everywhere and givin the aftermarket for these entry level cars that provide an good alternative to hotroding Civics. Cavaliers have a huge following with young people I believe this to be a big mistake on the part of GM

Coupes have been disappearing for the last two decades. Does anyone remember when 2-door Caprices and Crown Vics went away? It's just that the phenomenon is moving down the range, and has only now has started to reach the bottom.
As far as compact sedan derived import coupes, the Civic is pretty much by itself. The Sentra and Impreza coupes are long gone, the Corolla GTS died over a decade ago. That leaves us with the new Saturn Ion on the domestic side, dooffy doors and all.
Weighing in personally, I would not buy any two-car car if a four-door version was available. A Camaro or Vette is cool, but for a grocercy getter, forget it. It all comes down to the difference between a sports car, 2+2 coupe and a 2-door sedan. The first two are nifty, but I'd sooner own a minivan than a bogus 2-door sedan.

If the Cavalier Coupe is going away, it is a big mistake.
1) The move a lot of Cavalier 2-doors. Even if Cavalier is not a money maker, you need the variants at this price point. The only way I can see this being an OK move is if they have something else to fill the small entry coupe market. (And I'm not even thinking Camaro here).
2) Look what happened to Neon sales when the 2-door went away.
3) If you are really going to try to compete with Civic sales, you need the full lineup.

They only thing that would work is if they built a reskinned 2 door Cavalier that was something like the Celica, Tibaron, or RSX
Chevy needs a hot little coupe whether it is Cavalier or Malibu based. These are the cars that attract HS/college kids to your brand , not $30-50K V8 cars.
I'm willing to bet that the next gen Sunfire will still offer a coupe and might not even offer a sedan. The quit selling the four door Sunfire in the States this year. Personally, I don't see Chevy not having an FWD compact coupe as a problem the Ford Focus seem to do well with the youth market with only a sedan, wagon, and 3 and 5 door hatches. Let Saturn compete with the Civic crowd. They are suppose to be the import fighters though they'll need a better car than the ION if they expect to win though.

I did hear abouta Malibu MAX and Malibu SS talked about at the Dallas auto show, but I'm not sure on their specs or # of doors. Maybe GM is loking as these as an option.

I'm pretty sure there will be a Malibu SS, though.
I certainly won't be missing it, nor do i care for the cavalier coupe or any cavalier for that matter. No tears shed here. But GM could have done something good with the cavalier coupe.
The cavies image can't compete with that of the Japanese sport compacts. That and GM hasn't aggressively campaigned it like Dodge and Ford have with their sport compacts. Ford has the HID and Mach 460 option on some of their Focus's along with the SVT and other various special edition models. Dodge has the hot SRT-4 which is kicking serious ***. GM has??? a plain ol regular cavalier?

Coupes GM has killed since 1996:
Camaro
Firebird
Beretta
Eldorado
Grand Prix
Riviera
S-series (although replace with the quad coupe)
Tahoe/Yukon (well... it's a two door)
and now possibly the Calalier too.
well at least they have coming out
GTO
XLR
