Well, would it be possible for GM to start Oldsmobile back up?

I mean this would of course be after they fixed buick, pontiac, saab, saturn, gmc, cadillac, hummer, and chevy... would it cost GM too much money to put it back together or is it not feasable?

because Olds had a big following if i remember correctly just no products resembling "oldsmobile" with the last 15 years...

Too many things led to the demise of the Old name for a comeback.

I think the problem with the Oldsmobile was the "Old" in the name, which was fine when they were making Buick-like cars. But when Olds changed into a up-scale import alternative the "Old"smobile name just didn't fit anymore. I really wished they would have just dropped the Oldsmobile name, but continued with the models, or changed it to a GMC line of cars. I think they would have matched up well with the trucks. They may have thought about doing this, I believe the last couple of years of the Aurora didn't have the Oldsmobile name anywhere on the car inside and out.
The Alero was a huge seller for Olds, it would have been nice to see how a new Alero 2-door would look next to the Pontiac G6 coupe. The Intrique was about to get the Aurora's V8 as a option, which would have been the first V8 offered in the W-body and was due for a Aurora styled freshening. Aurora, still has one of the best interiors of a GM car.

Yes, before the some of the models were axed Oldsmobile was one of the top selling name plates, in the top 10 and sold more than Cadillac, Mercury, Chrysler, Saturn, Plymouth, and Lincoln at the time.

 

Actually, for a long time, Oldsmobile was the GM division that was first with many new technologies and oldsmobile was one of the top selling brands in the US. However, in a 10 year span, GM simply let everything wither away, leaving the "old" oldsmobiles that you are thinking of. They tried to go back to a cutting edge image, but all they ended up doing was alienating the "old" customers while winning few new ones.

At any rate, GM will never again have the market share to support adding another division. It's just too competitive now.

 

They say that at a point in time, 1 out of 5 Honda/Acura owners traded in their Oldsmobile for the import.

 

hopefully that is incorrect about the market share. GM's line ups are starting to look more and more appealing, in other parts of the world GM is increasing its shares so I would hope it could also do that here...

Hopefully the guy who did Caddilac will work on Buick and Pontiac. But where will the new stuff get tested? on Cadillacs? or Buicks?

...yeah, but nobody is going to have 50+% market share anytime soon, if ever. The US is probably going to end up being more like the European market... lots of 10-15% players and no one dominating.

 

Unknown to most, the problem with Oldsmobile started over 30 years prior to its demise. Even with a good product line-up the last 10 years or so, it would've been hard to save.

 

So you are saying Olds went down the crapper at the end of the muscle car era? Was it the demise of the 442? Olds was great in the 1980's, the Cutlass coupe was a very hot car back then. I think Olds sold more cars in the 80's than any other decade.

Of course it started to slide in the late 80's when everything went to FWD and all models were called a Cutlass. Then the early 90's just plain sucked.

 

I loved my 1986 Cutlass Supreme. I miss Olds. I would have rather lost Buick. I liked the Aurora and Intrigue. It would be nice if they could stash a Olds 88 or 98 at the Buick/Pontiac/GMC dealers just for nostalgia's sake. It is not a good business decision, but I would love to see it.

 

This is what I recall about of Oldsmobile's problem...

Oldsmobiles in the late 60s and early 70s all had sister cars, and although they cost the same to produce, they were priced several hundred dollars less.

Same cost + lower selling price = weak profits (if any)

I too miss Olds, they had some great cars in their day.
