6th gen Camaro powertrain talk......
CAUTION: Much speculation and educated guesswork in this thread.
It's become apparent that GM is moving forward with a TT 3.0L V6 for various products. Cadillac XTS, Buick LaCrosse and Enclave, next gen Impala, ATS and next gen CTS have all been rumored to get it. As opposed to an all out performance engine, the TTV6 looks like it'll be intended as a very fuel efficient, midlevel performance prime mover, for GM luxury car buyers. Just my guess, but I'd peg it's power in the 375-ish range.
At the same time, GenV smallblock development will continue for those products which are deemed to require a V8 - trucks, Corvette, certain versions of the Camaro, ATS and CTS, etc.
Anyhoo, there is a good possibility that Camaro may end up with both of these motors, especially if Mustang delivers both TTV6 and V8 on it's next gen car. Let's say a 375 hp TT 3.0L V6 as a midlevel powerplant and a 450 hp GenV smallbock as the halo car.
You can bet that for the halo car (oh, what the heck, let's call that a Z/28 ) you'll pay more than you will for the the midlevel car, eventhough a GenV smallblock will cost way less to manufacture than a twin turbo, intercooled, DOHC V6. It will be a CAFE strategy to funnel people into the higher MPG variants.
Who here would pay more for a cheaper to produce V8 vs a TTV6?

I would, BUT...
The price difference and what else I'd be getting for it would play a big role. Will the V8 version have better handling, more standard options, etc.?
I'd have no problem at all driving around a 375 HP TT V6 Camaro. TTAs are near the top of my list of favorite F-Bodies, so obviously a V8 isn't necessary for me.

Knowing GM the TT V6 will probably have cast or hyper pistons in it. If the top dog Camaro now can't get forged pistons then the next gen mid level engine certainly can't be justified in needing them.
Give me the V8.
Give me the V8.

That goes without saying, FI engines make stoopid power very easily, and I like big power as much as everybody else, but I'm not exactly beholden to the best dollar per HP ratio. V8 cars just resonate with me more than other engine configurations.

For the street, where 500 to 550 engine hp is about the limit of usable hp, then you can't beat a factory FI motor.
I could live with those pistons if they were up to the task of supporting good streetable hp (something like what's in the LNF.) Otherwise, that would definitely push me more towards the V8.

This would be my line up:
Base - N/A V6
RS - T V6
SS - V8
Z28 - T V8
Honestly though, one wouldn't need the Turbo 6 in my line up. It would overlab with the V8 to much and wouldn't make a good business sense. This is strictly from my gear head side of my brain, not my business side of things.

You'd better believe that a 4 cylinder will be in the mix.

By 2015 both the Mustang and Camaro will have ~200HP 4 cylinders. I would expect both to be rated somewhere around 35mpg, maybe even as high as 37-38mpg if they get HCCI.
200HP is plenty for a base Camaro or Mustang. Think about it, it wasn't until 2010 and 2011 that the Camaro and Mustang had base engines with more than ~200HP. Not Everyone needs a 305HP Mustang that can do a 13.7 in the 1/4mi. A lot of people that just buy these cars for the styling would probably be happier with an engine that could get 35+mpg.
my predictions:
Base: 200HP 4cyl. (35mpg)
RS : 330HP 3.6L V6 (30mpg)
SS : 380HP TT 3.0L (29mpg)
Z28: 475HP 6.2L V8 (26mpg)
Gas in 2014-15 will be $4.00-$6.00 a gallon.

I'm not sold on the 4 cylinder in a Camaro. I just don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. Mostly because of image.
If you want a Business list here it is.
Base - Corporate V6
SS - V8
Z28 - H.O. V8 with suspension work a bit of weight savings.
ZR/ZL - Supercharged (or what ever at the time) V8 lifted from CTS-V.
RS1 - Stripe and ground effects package. Can be added to anything, save ZR/ZL
RS2 - Same as above add Wheels (These are big money makers)
Convertible - Base and SS only.
