The problem is, you haven't inverted the units.

Say you went 65 miles on one Imperial gallon.

That would be 65/1 = 65mpg.

1 Imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons.

That would be 65/1.2 = 54mpg.

Yes yes it does. I knew i was forgetting a step. Duh. If the UK gallon is larger than our gallon, it would take more fuel to get to thier distance by .2 gallons. Got it now. makes sense. That will teach me to reply to a mathematical thread 5 minutes after i wake up (pretty sad for a person who took calc 2 huh...need to have my coffee in the morning first i guess.
