5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
I was responding to another topic and was wondering. How many anti "retro" people have Firebirds/TAs or liked them better than the Camaro? I was just wondering if maybe the lack of a TA coming out is making the push for a evolutionary/fresher design of the Camaro stronger on the board.
Just wondering because the new Camaro has to be both cars now...

I hinted at this a loooooooong time ago.... I think if GM absolutely wants to go retro with Camaro... then Firebird is a GREAT was to (try to) please everyone by going futuristic.....

I see a much bigger argument for a retro Camaro if there was a modern Firebird to go with it.
Re: 5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
When I voted I only took the '98-'02 model years into consideration really and for those years the Firebird gets my vote, (at least the WS6 does). So yes, '98-'02 I'll take the TA's, (most years I like Camaros better though), and I say NO to a retro Camaro
Re: 5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
I voted no for retro....
There are many styling cues that can be used from each generation. I'd rather see a 5th gen be it's own car but carry traits of those before it.
Here are a few examples. The prominent front grill began on the 2nd and was carried to the third and then the restyled 4th. Inset headlights are evident on everything since '82. Slight fender bulges set by the headlights were on 2nd and restyled 4th gen cars. These are things that will help identify a Camaro without it seeming to be a clone.
The 2005 Corvette is a very good example of this kind of styling.

Re: 5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
While I would prefer a less retro car, a retro one could grow on me.
I voted option #4.
I guess I like Camaros better since I've had 5 of them, and only 1 Firebird.

OK.....let me ask you this.........(food for thought....)
Is the 2005 Mustang Retro?
Are you sure about that?
Think about Mustang styling.........it's been pretty much consistent thru-out it's life.......rectangular grille insert with pony.....side scallops.....wheel-wells very rounded....tri-taillamp bezels.....not every year....but most......
Camaro on the other hand, has not. Yes, we can all spot Camaros from a mile away.......BUT.........there are not a lot of styling cues from all four generations. (For those of you who have been around long enough, let me assure you that when the 70 1/2 Camaro hit the streets......there were a lot of people going "WTF????")
(Come to think of it, I was driving an early 3rd Gen about 60 days before announcement.......no nameplates anywhere on the car......on the Atlantic City Expressway of all places......and NO ONE could figure out what it was at the service plaza......)
So......let's make sure that everyone is on the same page when we as a group say "Retro"
(let the slaughter begin!!!!!!!)
(Putting on flame suit.......)

Re: 5th gen Camaro design poll, a different take.
I agree that the word retro has been broadened beyond what it should have remained, a modern take of a '69-70 mustang IS retro to me...how-be-it smoothed, rounded and refined. I believe the Camaro can pull one better on the Stang by NOT using the same stampings as a '69 Z, just taking the "savory" parts. But some will say those "CUES" are "RETRO", but I disagree. If what makes it identifiable as a Camaro is considered "RETRO", then I HAVE to say retro is OK.(to a point) I think if people have to ask, "what is that?", it will fall short of its goal...
I was one of those crying, "NO! NO! You've ruined it!..back in 1970,...It looked NOTHING like a Camaro...Not to say it wasn't a beautiful car, but it could have easily been called by another name, it was sooooo different. Same in 1982 and 1993...While a Mustang was very identifiable as a Mustang.
I want to spot 5th gen in a crowded parking lot with no effort....but that's just me.
