..and just exactly what do you suggest we obsess with...we are on CZ28.
Z/28 and Z28 were never the top-dog models when SS's were also sold.
In which way do you mean. Performance? Image? Racing championships won? Desirability?
The only reason the Z28 was introduced in the first place was the 305-inch-limited Trans-Am Racing series (the sister of the Pontiac Trans Am).
The Z/28 was created to beat Ford and Mopar in a wildly popular road race series. The 5 liter displacement rule which created the Z/28 302 was only part of the package to homologate the Camaro for TransAm.

Touche'.

The 5 liter displacement rule which created the Z/28 302 was only part of the package to homologate the Camaro for TransAm. Right. In a perfect world the SS would be the big-block street-brawler, and the Z/28 would be the race car. That's the way it was when the brands were first introduced.
I'm still curious to know which year-model Z/28 out-performed the same year-model SS.
------------------
99 SS 'vert #3143 (Bought used Sept 8th, 2001)
Arctic White w/black top
10-point roll cage
Simpson 5-point harnesses
!back seat (damn cage)
!CAGS, only "performance" mod I know of.
Why the rollcage? Damned if I know; I bought it that way, and since I've run a 13.637 1/4, I'm keeping it! Besides, it looks cool.

Pretty much all years.
Most SS Camaros were equipped with the L-48 350. They were good for 15 sec 1/4 mile times.
As for big blocks, the 325 hp L-35 396 was the most common...most were good for low 15s and for big blocks were considered "slugs" on the street at the time.
A very few L-78 375 hp 396 Camaros were produced from '67-'69...now these were the bruisers giving the Z/28 a run for it's money on the drag strip....but the big block really created an ill handling Camaro.
Chuck Hughes, who was a developemental engineer during the creation of the Camaro, and later it's chief engineer, had this to say about the big block Camaros:
" That was not one of my favorite programs because it took a fairly agile car and made a truck out of it"
By 1970 when Trans Am allowed destroking...and street Z/28s got 360 hp LT-1s...the debate was over.

Also....
Chevy must have figured out this Camaro performance hierarchy. In 1973 they replaced the Camaro SS with the luxury orientated Type LT.
