Weight and rear end gearing is the reason for the dropoff in GTO milage... in particular the automatic.

That car is hurting for the new 6 speed automatic.

also for those that don't know, the LS1 GTO was rated at 29 hwy

I hope the new 6-speed auto goes into all of LSx powered vehicles. I think it would be a great addition in performance, strength, sophistication, and gas milage.

It could be a leg up for them, and they need it. I wouldn't eliminate reg. manuals, yet though.

OH NO NO, I certainly don't mean to get rid of a 6-speed manual.

I don't think it's aero related, at least not as much I one would think. Weight and gearing has a lot to do with mileage as well. Plus, in the case of the GTO automatic, the way the torque converter is tuned makes it pretty thirsty, or so I'm told.
IIRC, the "highway" test is done at steady-state cruise, with the air off, at 55mph... Aerodynamics at 55mph is pretty low on the list of importance.

The EPA tests are done on a dyno and not actually on a road. They are supposedly adjusted to account for aero... and then after they are done the numbers are reduced by 10% for city rating and 22% for highway rating.

That said, the GTO is bound to have more frontal area than a Vette as well.

I can verify the claim.....I'm driving a captive test fleet Z06......driven it to Carlisle PA and to Pittsburgh three times..........and have never averaged less than 26.4........on a green engine. (I'm not talking about how fast I was going............<evilgrin>)

I'm prejudiced......but this car is amazing........and the engine is a work of art.

You lucky dog you! Don't rub it in. I mist Carlisle this year, due to unforseen opti-problems, on like thursday of that week! For a car that doesn't need a timing light, it sure had awful timing. Yes it is truely a work of art. Oh you'll be getting a package soon, with some pics of some of my Chevy/Camaro stuff. Yes, I'm a little slow! I'll send you a pic of my permanent Bowtie too!

Yes. Give this man a cigar. Rub it in. Make it so they can't deny it.

Then, at the end of the ad, imply, "If we can build a 505HP sportscar with economy like a Camry, just imagine what else we can do."

Leave it open. Steal their thunder. Kill em. It's time.

See, there's the problem. We're left to imagine what else GM could do. Case in point - the G6's fuel economy. It's a slippery car, with a proper 6-speed manual, and yet the Z06 gets similar EPA numbers. Kinda weird, eh? Probably not the sort of opening one wants to give to its competitors.

Regardless of that, the Z06 just keeps on looking better and better, eh? Abso-frickin'-lutely amazing. Dare I say that this car represents the most thoroughly engineered vehicle ever to hit the road?

I can just imagine a comercial, "If a Chevy Small block can do this" (show a truck and a regular vette do something pretty cool or better then its class)

"What can the All New Chevy Big Block Do for you?" (now show the z06 covered in race flags, and show a 8.1 truck doing something heavy duty)

"With 26 mpg on the highway and 505 HP, What else can we do for you?"

and on the note of what else can they do...

Couldnt GM get a 3.0 l LS2 derivitive V4 or I4 and produce 200 hp with stunning fuel efficency? or is the ecotech better?
