When I first saw pictures of the California Concept in the late '80's..I was literally walking on air with excitement. WOW! this is the next Camaro!
But eventhough the 4th gen grabbed some of the styling cues of the concept....it lost it's essence. It lost it's 21st century proportions, it's short overhangs and it's agressive wheel/tire combo.

The GTZ was actually a 3rd gen concept. It had two purposes. One was to show styling elements that the 3rd gen might get later in it's product cycle. But probably more importantly, was to showcase a really hot 90* V6. At the time, the whole world was convinced that V8's would soon be gone.

Short overhangs? From the second picture I'd say the front overhang looks even longer than the 4th Gen turned out to be. Aggressive wheel and tire combos that show up on concepts almost never make it to production, unfortunately. I think the 4th gen looked strikingly like this concept, just tweaked to not look so "Jetson-ish".

i've said it before and i'll say it again...it looks more like an eagle talon than a camaro
by the way, anybody catch the discovery channel special on the ford gt? i thought it was pretty interesting myself
From what i remember when looking at it from the side, the front overhangs are about the same (but with a much more pointed nose) but the rear overhang was MUCH, much shorter. It gave the whole car a 'moving spear head' profile weighted neavily to the front.
The Cali Camaro looked much more nimble than the 4th gens to me for some reason.
That concept also had the 3.4 Dual Twin Cam engine, but rated at I think 275 hp.

I like it much more than the production 4th gen.
And since we are running down memory lane. What ever happened with the Corvette Indy. Was anything from that concept used in production cars?
