The 2005 Super Duty can be equipped with a 5.4-liter Triton V-8 engine or 6.8-liter Triton V-10 — each featuring three valves per cylinder rather than four, which improves fuel efficiency without compromising power.

I figured the 6.8L v10 would get the 3valve treatment as well. I wonder what the output will be.

this is funny, because Mercedes, once the stalwart of 3 valve engines has recently began a push to convert their engines to DOHC 4 valvers all the while Ford is doing the opposite.

So what are the advantages of three valves over four? Why would it give you better fuel economy? Are the three valve motors SOHC and so benefit from two less cams?

Actually--Mercedes was 4 THEN 3 and now going back to 4 valves per cly. I think cost was sighted going from 4-3.

Fords V-10 has been a pretty gutless motor. I have a test of 3/4 ton GM 6.0 and 3/4 ton Fod 6.8L V10---it gets smoked.

Heres hoping GM pumps up the 8.1L!

Yeah, 3valve motors are usually Sohc. I guess you get a lighter, cheaper, and more compact motor in the end (sohc vs dohc).

From what i've gathered, the 3valve heads on the GT flow as well (or near as well) as the 4valve heads in the Cobra's and Mach 1's. So airflow is improved due to the 2 intake valves in comparison to the 2valve heads 1 intake valve.

Here's a readup on the 5.4L 3valve motor. They talk about a few of the benifits of 3 valve heads.

You wanna talk about a big, almost intimidating pickup. You walk up to it and you want to search for the Mack hood ornament. I consider it very much like the first time I saw the Ram after its 90's redesign.

Well ford is now at the bottom of the diesel wars with 570 torque. GM has 590 and Dodge is at 600.
