WHat percentages? 5 miles of gridlock, and then 5 miles of freeway would not be a 50/50 split.

How long have you had it? What is your mileage like on a road trip (cruise set to 70-75)?

I was thinking about Threxx's comment about GM vehicles and real world MPG when we took the wife's '09 Malibu on a road trip this past weekend. It still has the 4 speed so I believe it was rated at 22/30. Averaged 30 on the way down with the A/C running and the cruise set between 75 and 80. Then averaged 32 on the way back with no A/C and running the same speeds. I was satisfied.

I should of bought your Malibu then. I have a 2011 I4 model that boasts an EPA 33mpg (highway)... but I have yet to achieve anywhere near that. I do 85% freeway driving and usually see 26-27mpg. I know it's not bad, but considering I had a 2006 beater V6 Impala LS that was averaging 29-30mpg (EPA 28mpg Highway) on the same route everyday, I find the numbers (as of recent) to be misleading.

Like the Escape better - mainly because the A-pillar makes it much easier to get in and out of (6' 3") so that was the deal breaker. Only Ford I've ever owned, but it went 11 years and 240K miles with no problems before the tranny went out. Parted it out, and I've regretted it. Will take a long look at the Escape when he gets to Tampa.

My wifes 'Nox didn't get good MPG at first. After a couple thousand miles it kept getting better. So, these new engines have to be broke in. I think she averages 27 MPG, which is a good for as big as it is. It is the 4 banger but it's really not underpowered for what we use it for.

It's not a measurable exact science on how much of which type of driving. Mixed driving is about the best way to qualify it. Not Manhattan grid lock, but driving in Dallas suburbs (40/45mph zones) we typically over half of this "city" driving is off peak and isn't grid lock by most. The other part or majority of the mix is highway/tollway I would estimate about 60% to 65% of the total driven (2039) would be highway (70mph) at this point.

We've had it for roughly 6 weeks. No road trips yet. We do have a 6 hour one way, 12 hour total round trip scheduled for the second week in June so we'll have a good idea of all highway mileage during that trip.

My initial expectation was higher. I attempt to do a good job at efficient driving, coasting, maintaining momentum, losing speed up hill and regaining it going down to avoid using more gas. Keeping one of the IC displays on instant fuel economy is part of the regiment. Also around Dallas there isn't any significant elevation changes of any kind, so hilly terrain isn't a concern.

I'm hoping it betters over time.

I was under the impression engine manufacturing had attempted to take out most anything a customer could to to negatively effect break in (warranty and satisfaction). Understanding that there still are recommendations in the manual for break in. With the this vehicle it's driving at varying speeds for 1000 miles and not towing a trailer.
