2012 Mustang Boss 302 priced at $40,995

Ford has yet to officially release pricing for the 2012 Mustang Boss 302, but a forum member over at TheMustangSource.com with some inside information has revealed that the special edition pony car will retail for $40,995 including destination and delivery. This places the Boss 302 almost squarely in the middle between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500.

While certain things like a navigation system won't be available, Boss 302 customers will have a few options to choose from. Recaro seats and a Torsen differential adds $1,995, an Accessory Package with floor mats and car cover go for an extra $475, and Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat paint is an additional $495. The track-oriented Laguna Seca Package comes in at a grand total of $47,990.

At first we weren't sure about the complete accuracy of the information, but a representative at Ford has confirmed these numbers and options. So is the 2012 Boss 302 a steal at $40,995 or is that crazy money for a hopped up pony car with a live rear axle? Let us know in the comments below.

Pricey. Getting that close to a Corvette with all of the packages, I am probably going with the Vette.

Yep. Unless I would actually use the back seat to take the kids for a cruise now and then, the Vette wins.

It's also knocking on the door of GT500 pricing. So even in the Mustang camp, Vette aside, I doubt I'd take a Boss. I bet it is a kickass ride though, and it would require a back to back comparison to be sure. But I'm not one who's going to take the car to the track much / ever, while I would let loose all 550 hp in a GT500 in quick blasts now and then...

Since your concerns are based on a Mustang coming close to Corvette pricing, I wonder if you 2 will hold the same view when the Z28 comes out (wait till you see the expected price on those) or if we're going to go with the one sided approach with a lot of hand wringing and rationalizing.

How awesome would it be in GM prices the Z28 at $39,995 with 1SS options. They easily could, although the bean counters will see what Ford did and sell the Z28 only with loaded 2SS options at closer to $50k.

not to mention inevitable dealer markups which will skew everything out of whack

I would seriously consider one if I could get it at (and not a penny above) MSRP. That seems very unlikely to me.

So....I'm headed towards a lightly-used 08-09 Corvette ($32k-$35k range).

It WOULD be awesome . The Z28 is going squarely against the GT500 though , not the BOSS . GM just doesnt seem to be interested in producing a BOSS like Camaro, on the assembly line as a new model anyways. There will be a whole bunch of pedders suspension pieces and other SS-x parts should you wanna create your own BOSS type Camaro with a base 1 ss, available at the dealer level at delivery time .

If thats the real base price for the Boss , not sure your gonna get more performance for the money in a brand new car .

Base GT starts at $30K. Base GT500 starts at $49K. Boss coming in at $41K seems right about right.

I love the talk about markups on this car. Like Guy said, just wait to see the markups on the Z28 when it comes out. I would imagine that it would take over a year for someone to buy one under $60K. I would expect a base price for the Z28 to be just under $50K.

The base Vette is about $50K. The base GS is about $55K. I would expect the Boss to be very competitive on a track, to either.

I do expect Z28 markups to be really ugly as well, but this thread is about the Boss. I guess it's the first year exclusivity tax, but I'm always sorry when they do it for the people that want one and waited a couple years.

A local Ford dealer had a $17,000 markup on a new T bird when they first came out. I stopped buying my truck parts there. When I got my Z06, all the local Chevy dealers had a $10,000 markup on theirs, so i went elsewhere. When they do that, I just don't go there - for anything - except looking at the cars and letting them waste their time trying to sell me one.

I think the Boss will be a car worth having - kinda pricey - yeah...

I have 2 kids right now, I know exactly what you mean. But I am more likely looking at something with 4 doors. I had my Formula Firebird with 1 of the kids, cars seats are too much of a pain. I will need them to get out of cars seats and buckling themselves before I can get a coupe anything

No, I agree that if the Z28 comes too close to Corvette pricing, it will be a tough sell. Too expensive for the my taste. Besides, you might be able to get the Vette for a better price depending on the deal you could make on either the Boss or the Z28. But, that is really tough to measure and depends on how well you haggle. Also depends upon the options you get with the Vette.

Depends on what you consider competitive. Mustang has more horsepower, but less torque. Vette is lighter with a better suspension. I don't see the Mustang being close to a Vette with equal drivers.

Re: 2012 Mustang Boss 302 priced at $40,995

I believe its been rumored the z28 will price out at 44,900 dollars.. but either way ...this new Mustang Boss 302 is awesome. I like it better than the GT500 without a doubt...

but not better than a Corvette or a camaro SS...

In my opinion the 31 grand for a 1ss Camaro SS is a killer deal. I hope to see the new Z28 start at 44,900 and obviously move upward as the options pile on (for those that gotta have them)

I'm digging my vette but even after a dozen years of various 2 seat corvettes...there truly is something nice to having those two small jump seats in the back of the camaro or mustang..

I still think GM should offer up a camaro SS track pak....with 19 inch lightweight rims...maybe a hard shell ...rear seat/ no cushions etc... and a few other weight saving options ala Porsche clubsport..(keep the a/c and p/w though)..then add an air filter or some pcm tune to get hp up to 440 450 hp which is easy on the LS3....)

The camaro SS track pak would make for an interesting battle with the 440hp Boss 302..

I envision this to be online in the second year of limited boss 302 production...unless the z28 really does roll out at a base msrp of 44,900...

I'm not a ford enthusiast but I do like the boss 302 a lot...more so than even the gt500...but not more than a 44900 dollar z28..

And as a corvette owner...Let the camaro Z28 be all that it can be....and screw the corvette owners who might whine ...blah...blah..blah..

if they want more in power in their corvettes? Then let them pony up for a z06 or a ZR1..

Case closed....besides the vettes like 3300 lbs so it still has some handling advantages (small as they might be it should be enough to shut the corvette whinners up and remember not all corvettes whine about nonsense like the camaro Z28 smokes it @SS! ) LOL

Re: 2012 Mustang Boss 302 priced at $40,995

Agreed, 40k isn't to shabby, it comes factory with a forged rotating assembly and some other nice go fast goodies like CNC'd heads, not to mention the adjustable suspension and other bits and pieces. Plus you get some school time with the car as well.

I'll be interested to see how the Boss and GT500 stack up on the track. IIRC the 2011 GT500 by dint of its power was posting better times than the M3 already, but even with 125 pounds off the nose (block + e-steering) it still wont be quite as nimble as the boss.

On the otherhand, if somebody wants decent handling and effortless power, the GT500 is the car to get.
