Re: 2008 Supra

Regardless of what you think of the looks of the car (I don't care for it either - at least not the pictures), 450 bhp out of a mass-produced 5.0L N/A V8 is quite impressive - that's 50 HP more than the current Vette/GTO has with 1.2 more liters.

Though V6s aren't my thing, 350 HP from 3.5Ls is equally impressive.

Also, I'm pretty sure a $50k price tag does not target your typical "ricer" crowd.

i was thinking the same thing, really impressive numbers from those engines. It really makes me wish the new Camaro would get a 400hp LS2 as the base V8. I can just hear it now if the Toyota V6 puts out as much or more than the base Camaro, or even Mustang for that matter, V8 engine.

Sure it's good, but I'll wait to see the dyno graphs and look at the torque curves before making any judgments.

Re: 2008 Supra

I don't know the specs for that engine... But I would venture that Chevy could easily pull 400+ HP out of the 5.3L if they would go to a Direct Injection setup. Don't know if it's in the plans or not. Throw in a more aggressive cam and 400+ should be easily attainable. (With DI, you wouldn't need to get that wild with the Cam either...)

Re: 2008 Supra

Agree with the dyno, could care less about the torque curve - so long as it makes sufficient torque at a sufficient rpm to achieve the stated HP.

It certainly does not target the ricer crowd. Hopefully it will not price itself out of existence like it did the last time around. I am most curious about how the "cheap" model will stack up to the likes of 350Z and Camaro. Obviously not just performance wise.

Im pretty sure thats a conceptual design by a magazine artist. Japanese magazines tend to take peices from other cars when coming up with what they think a car will look like.

That's what I'm thinking. 350z competitor? How? Looks like a vette competitor to me.

Thank you for posting the next car in a long line of vehicles to be humiliated by the mighty Corvette.

Re: 2008 Supra

450 horsepower / 383 torque for 50 grand in the Supra
or
400 horsepower /400 torque for 44 grand in the Vette

That's the absolute base price on the Vette and obviously we don't know if the Supra will be 50k or higher or lower or how its standard options list will compare to the base model/equipped Vette, but I feel pretty safe in saying that, while it's very possible that the Vette will remain a the best power and sports car for the dollar in the entire US,... it sounds like the Supra may come damn close, and that's enough to say it doesn't exactly sound like a rip off, as no other car out there has managed to come even remotely close.
