Even with all the Z06's weight saving features, it'll only come in slightly lighter than a base C6.

I still haven't warmed up to the new Corvette's styling. Sure, parking it next to a C5 drives home how modern it is, but I still am not a big fan of it's looks.
BUT... I have to say, those simple additions of a hood scoop (nosescoop since it's not on the hood?) and redesigned side heat extractors and that rear brake scoop has warmed me up.....ALOT!

I think I tried to explain why the Z06 wouldn't come in under 3000 lbs. quite some time ago, but the "faithful" just wouldn't listen. So now I'm going to say, "I told you so." Have a nice day!

Just read the article...there's so much more "stuff" packed into the Z verses the base Vette that even with aluminum frame rails, CF hood and front fenders and a magnesium engine cradle and roof panel, the car is only 50 lbs lighter.
You add in dry sump oiling, larger front and rear brakes, larger wheels and tires, a rear transmission and differential oil cooler setup, etc. etc. and yes you add a lot of weight.
For all the race-based stuff they've put into the car I think they've done a remarkable job. If they can MSRP this think for under $70K then I'll be impressed!
But I'm also waiting for the whiners that will say the C5 Z06 was $55,000 so it is somehow a ripoff that the C6 Z is so much more expensive. Nevermind how much more expensive all the new "stuff" is, or that the base Vette has C5 Z06 performance for less money....

Does the Z06's weight, including all of the aluminum, CF and magnesium, tell you guys anything about how hard it is to get a car's weight down?
Makes me even more of a doubter on that 3400 lb Camaro stuff....
If the Z comes in at $65K, that will be a huge thing IMO. Ford GT performance at 50% of the price, hopefully with fewer recalls, LOL. [cue Ford fanboy comments!!!]

I never expected under 3000lbs. but I did expect it to be lighter than the C5 Z06. Since the C5 Z06 was 3118lbs. the C6 version could have came in just 19lbs. less at 3099lbs. and still been in that expected 30XXlbs. range.
Either way the car is badass and has a ton more actual performance modifications. Good article, can't wait to see it at the NAIAS. Any news on a paddle shift 6 speed? in one of the press photos it looked like it had an automatic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../c6z2copy1.jpg
