2006 Porsche Cayman S
Sounds pretty sweet

depending on which side of the estimated $60k price, this car would be edging into the Corvette Z51 range....
It would be really interesting to see a head to head comparison between the two!
My guess is the Cayman S would win overall.. and actual roadcourse times may be close.. I bet the Cayman would probably be rated higher on "feel"

400hp Z51 Corvette vs. sub-300hp Porsche that's at least $10,000 more expensive.
Yeah, that's about right.
Ladies and gents, I present to you the next car in a long and distinguished line of vehicles from various manufacturers to get pounded into scrap metal and tossed onto the garbage dump of history by the Chevrolet Corvette.
RX-7...
Supra...
300ZX...
Thunderbird... TWICE...
944...
928...
Heh. Bring it on.
Re: 2006 Porsche Cayman S
I dunno about everywhere else.. I can see the Vette winning on raw accel times and price.. but 'everything else' will probably be close.. Plus the Porsche's always seem to get rank much higher in the feel of handling and brakes in the magzine reviews..
Even the difference between $50k and $60k.. I think the people in the market for one in that range, it isn't going to be too far of a stretch to spring the extra money for a Cayman S, if they personally decide they like it better.
BTW, whats the price on a Z51? I thought they edge closer to $55k... If the Cayman is $60k flat.. price differnece may just be $5k... relatively, not much.

Re: 2006 Porsche Cayman S
Only 295HP
For a $60,000 sports car I better get more HP than a Mustang GT. The Vette has had over 300HP since 1992 (or 90 if you count the ZR1)
Base Z51 will set you back $46,205

Re: 2006 Porsche Cayman S
Anyone ever seen a Porsche dealer's options listings?
Sure, it might be based at $60k, but assuming that, you're going to be hard pressed getting out of the dealer for less than $70k. Only the krauts have the ***** to ask $300-$400 for floormats...$700 for footwell lights...
You get my drift?

Re: 2006 Porsche Cayman S
Well, I'll just wait for a head to head comparison.. I won't be surprised if the Cayman S may be able to equalize that hp definciency on a roadcourse.
After you add in all the options though, I'm sure MSRP floats above $50k.. also wonder what the Cayman S would be loaded with.
Again, I think a review overall looking at both cars would be interesting.
Cause that last review, where the Corvette won against a bunch of cars, was simply cause the vette was cheaper. Else the Boxter S would have won.. If the Cayman S is faster than the Boxter S, for not much more, may be enough to tip the scales.
Raw HP helps, but isn't the only factor.
BTW, the Cayman S is a little less than 3000 lbs.. the Mustang is, what, 500 lbs heavier?

Even family cars like the Impala or Altima can match that.

When has Porsche ever been the company producing high HP straight line monsters that you guys are apparently expecting? Porsche is all about cars with great handling characteristic and being fun to drive.

"In many cases, even for nearly twice as much money, Porsche can't seem to manage beating back that pesky Corvette on a road course..."
Shhhh.... hear that in the distance? That's the latest and greatest Porsche a$$ kicking coming.
Let's not even talk about what a Porsche of comparable performance to the C6 Z06 is going to cost.

Besides, this is Porsche's mid level coupe, which is placed between Boxter and Carrera. Go ahead and compare the Corvette with Carrera... but the Cayman would be more inline to compare to say... the Camaro?
I love Camaros and American muscle, however, a Porsche is still a Porsche.
