I'd just like to add a few things. My friend had a 96' GT(it was an absolute dog by the way) and you can't talk about getting in and out quicker in that car than in an F-body. The seating all around is just terrible and I do not fit anywhere in that car. At 6'3", I have to bend my head in the back while I am still rubbing the roof. So what I am saying is, those are bad examples. I also agree with the last paragraph from BigDarknFast about the 5th gen. Look foward.

HOW MANY? Umm. Every magazine comparasion between Camaro vs. Mustang I've read over the past 10 years favored the Camaro in styling and performance. That was the major reason the magazines favored Camaro over Mustang. Not just performance but styling. Styling is not why these car didn't sell.

Parallel park your T/A on a busy narrow street in a tight space, then try the same in a 2002 Mustang. Go to lunch, and offer to take 3 buddies with you in the T/A, then try it with a Mustang. Change your spark plugs, or install a set of headers on your T/A, then try it on a Mustang. THESE types of things are as important to some people, as your professed "performance on a budget" is to you. Just as I will accept your stance as a "performance purist" who is willing to accept shortcomings in some areas to afford you maximum performance, you should be willing to accept my (and millions of others') position as an "overall practical platform enthusiast". Just because it's practical doesn't mean it can't be fast, or fun either.
As a 4th Gen. owner I don't have these problems with the car that all of these non owners are always talking about.
I like the low seating, I like the cockpit style interior, I have no problems with visablity, I have no problems parallel parking. I take friends out in my car all the time.
I am 6'4" and weigh 250lbs. I don't have problems getting in and out. I have plenty of head room actually alot more than Mustang offers.
The space in back in limited to 2 people and cargo space in the rear hatch area is limited also but is more versatile with the capablabilty of folding down the rear seats, that doubles the cargo area. These cars were not designed around the rear seats. they were designed around the driver.
Overall I think the 4th gen. cars are a good package. Strong perfromance, excellent handling, good fuel economy for highway driving, T-top roof for fun summer time cruising, and great sleek looks, 500 watt factory stereo.
F-Bods do all of these things just as good or better than Mustang so to me the F-Bods are a better total package.

I think insurance companies kept these cars out of reach for most people owning these cars who would love to have one. They did me until I turned 25. Then the insurance rates decreased to an affordable amount.
Also a changing auto market affected the sales too. The SUV craze and the young generation of performance enthusisiast turned to the import cars for there rides.

and now back to mustangs vs camaros...i've owned both,i had a '95 camaro,it had good ergonomics,i could reach everything just fine, the front seats were cool, the back seats were comfortable to ride in,you sit down and low and it was kinda like alittle cubby hole,my friends never minded sitting back there,it was better than my mustang in that regard.the mustang has better rear visibilty,in IMO,changing lanes in the camaro was best guess at best.i could get in and out of the camaro just fine,i got used to the huge-*** dashboard after about an hour when i first got it.i don't think i ever got used to never seeing where the front ended, but big deal, just be careful parking.the styling was awesome,i will own another '93-'97 camaro, just beautiful.women loved it too,i work with two ladies who own these cars, one has a '00 SS,the other has a '96 Z28,and they have no problem with these cars.the local pontiac place sold a then new '01 ram air formula to a lady in her
'60s,it was her 3rd firebird.but as to which car is better,my camaro or my mustang,i say it's a draw.quality.handling.performance(i driven both V6 and V8).it's basically down to personal preference.
what killed the f-body?high V6 prices.and poor, gutless GM management.other than those ideas,i'm completely at a loss for why these cars died.**** on GM,they deserve every lost sale to the mustang.
