FWIW, Pontiac quotes 6.6 seconds 0-60 for the G6 GTP...didn't say if that was the 6 speed or the A4.

A lot of agencies are unhappy with the Ford Crown Vic, I see a huge shift to the Dodge Charger when it becomes available in a couple of months. Under a state contact price the Police Pkg. Charger with a Hemi should be around $22K which is slightly more than a Crown Vic, but Charger is a whole lot more of a car.

I know the CHP is highly interested in the Charger. They are starting to retire the B4Cs, and they need a car that covers alot of ground very quickly (outside of urban areas, the CHP is spread pretty thin to respond to accidents, chases, etc).
I think everyone's waiting to see how it does in the upcoming annual Michigan State Police tests.

Its quite possible look at the S/C Grand Prixs with 240hp, they are limited to 115-120 mph but take off the limiter and they will do every bit of 140 mph. Also the 90s Impala SS and Caprice 9C1 would top out around 148 mph with the 260 hp LT1.

Those performance numbers are for the police Impala and don't forget that Police cars are full of extra crap that doesn't come on the regular version. The Police package weighs a good bit more. Now, if the regular Impala 3.9 was that slow, then yes, there would be a problem.

None the less, as far as police cruisers go, 8 seconds to 60 and a 140 top end isn't bad at all.
On the other side, all this is a completely moot point anyway. State Highway Patrol agencies don't use FWD for highway pursuit duty. 9C1 Impalas are almost exclusively city & county cars.

Within a minute, an unmarked FWD Impala turns its lights on behind me and pulls me over. He warns me about the state law to slow down or move to the other lane when passing an emergency vehicle on the side of the road.
Thankfully, I didn't get a ticket, but I left thinking, "What a sneaky bastard!"

Re: 2006 Impala 9C1 Acceleration #s and Top Speed
actually, the problem with the 5.3 is a cooling issue....the trans will be fine. There is work going on to see what can be done to correct the issue......
Remember that a lot of police cruisers sit for long periods of time at accident scenes with the engine idling.....sometimes in triple digit ambient temps.
As to the acceleration numbers, keep in mind that a light bar creates substantial drag..........esp. when the speeds get past 70. (stick your hand out of the window at 70....and you'll see what I mean.......)

I have friends that work at "Kerr's Industries" in Oshawa Ontario and they have the contract to outfit the cars with all the police equipment and I was told that the main problem with the 5.3 was basically how hard it was to work on it and do the maintenance on these cars.
There has to be a lot more to it but everyone's concerned here in Oshawa with them losing the contract for outfitting the Impalas with the police package especially since Dodge got the Charger.
I hope the police forces appreciate the new 6cyl. enough to order as many units as the 05 models.

UPDATE: The Impala 9C1 gets V-rated Pirelli tires. With V-rated tires this will make the 140 mph top speed possible.
If the 3.9L is capable of 140 mph, I wonder where the LS4 SS tops out at? 150-155 mph?
