2006 Impala 9C1 Acceleration #s and Top Speed

Once again if you missed my thread on police pkg cars for 2006 from earlier this year, the new Impala 9C1 is not getting the 5.3L V8 that the Impala SS will have.

The 2006 Impala 9C1 is getting the 240hp 3.9L V6. Which is the mid-engine option in the civilian Impala. The new 9C1 has a 0 to 60 time of 8.0 seconds which is 0.7 faster than the '05 Impala 9C1. 0 to 100 time is 20.7 seconds which is 5 seconds faster than the '05 Impala and 3 seconds faster than the Ford Police Interceptor to 100 mph. Top Speed for the new Impala 9C1 is 140 mph. I don't know if that top speed will be limited on production model like the '05 was limited to 123 mph. There could be a V-rated tire option that would allow for the 140 mph top speed. The Ford Police Interceptor is limited to 129 mph and the new Dodge Charger/Enforcer will be to 140 mph also.

An offical Police pkg. Charger hasn't been tested yet but expect them to be very close to the Charger R/T w/the 5.7L Hemi.

Not getting the 5.3 DoD? I guess I stand corrected. Doesn't make any sense though.

I agree. With the 5.3, they'd be fairly quick. I'd say a tick or two slower than the 5.7L charger. For a cop car, that's very fast. Easily bests the old LT1 caprice.

I don't know why GM is holding back on the 5.3. Makes you wonder if they'll ever get serious about offering a good police package sedan once again.

The 4T65E would take a dump in about a week in police situations, especially if they let the motor do what it can really do.

Maybe when the new 6 speed autos come, 1-2 years.

They're going for the majority of sales which will be V6 models. They could offer the V8 just like the Charger - but I wouldn't expect a ton of those sold except for special editions. Impala w/ the 3.9L is going after the Crown Vic's old spot... ;)

A police car doesn't need to be a race car anymore. And I imagine gas prices (fuel economy) are a leading factor too - although I can't say I've seen numbers comparing the 3.9 to the 5.3Dod - one would assume the 3.9 will be better...

91_z28_4me is right. No V8 9C1 Impalas because of the transmission. :thumb:

None the less, as far as police cruisers go, 8 seconds to 60 and a 140 top end isn't bad at all.

On the other side, all this is a completely moot point anyway. State Highway Patrol agencies don't use FWD for highway pursuit duty. 9C1 Impalas are almost exclusively city & county cars.

Agreed...those that bought the last Impala will buy the new ones. Those who used to buy Crown Vics, if they're smart, will go after the Hemis :D

Either way, those are strong numbers...because as we all know, the cops always seem to be at least 0.5 sec to 60 behind the rags' tests of the civilian versions.

This is what State Troopers should use instead of Impalas.

Interceptor
Interceptor 2

You want to know why Ford and GM are in so much trouble, look at the Crown Vic. Its pathetic that Ford hasn't come close to offering the same amount of power and speed as the 1996 9C1 Caprice.

What's even worse is that GM owned Ford in that segment, and quit making the cars.

8.0 seconds. Now I understand why Pontiac opted to keep the 3800 S/C for the Grand Prix's middle option. Can anyone tell me why the 3.9L car is some much slower than the L67 cars? Yes I realize it has less torque, but that's at very least a full second slower than what the L67 cars can do.

For 80% of Police work fuel economy should be more important than performance. The V6 will save some municipalities some money. Think of the anual savings of buying 20 V6 impalas over 20 V8 4,000lbs. cars clocking 80,000+ mi a year each.

The crown vic is not bad for a 20 year old platform.

That's your opinion. If Ford had bothered to change the styling, interior, and put a decent motor under the hood, then I would have a much higher opinion of it.
