2006 Grand Prix GT Question
2006 Grand Prix GT Question
My friend wants to buy a new GP this fall. He personally loves the GXP but since he just got married and is starting a new job, it may stretch his budget more then he'd like. Since the 3800 Supercharged V6 will be moving to the GT line for '06 he's considering that instead but he wanted to know what the changes were.
Does anyone have any more information about the 2006 GT? With the addition of the GXP as the top of the line model, would he still be able to get "GTP-esque" performance options in the 2006 GT? For example, any idea if he can get the tapshift, heads-up display, performance suspension without having to buy the GXP?
Any info is appreciated.
Chris

Re: 2006 Grand Prix GT Question
I am pretty sure the wheels and suspension are exclusive to the GXP. TAP shift and HUD might be available now that the GT gets the blown 3800, but personally having driven with the TAP shift, it's a pretty useless feature. The shifts are delayed noticeably, and you only have 4 gears to go through. The HUD on the other hand is very cool. I think there are 1 or 2 Pontiac salesmen on this board, they should know the detailed model info.
Re: 2006 Grand Prix GT Question
Well, coming from one of the aforementioned Pontiac salespeople...
Changes include:
-260hp s/c 3800
-17" wheels standard
-Optional interior trim group that should liven it up inside (available on all models)
-New nose, as seen on GXP
Pricing wasn't out as of last weekend, but I will say this. The '05 GXP impresses me so much that I had one on hold for a week while I tried to straighten out my finances and sell my current GP. Clearer heads prevailed, and I held onto my car. However, if the '06 GT can hold the same price as the '05 ($25,700) with the new equipment, I may have to grab one of those instead! With GM lowering prices across the board, if they did nothing more than kept the MSRP of a GT the same, it'd be a steal.
BTW, not sure about Tap Shift, but HUD was always available on a GT as part of the "Info Tech" package. Not sure if Tap Shift remains optional with the s/c 3800 or not...I can look into it tomorrow when I head to the dealership, or maybe Lew has the answer...
Tell your friend good luck! GP GTs are about to be a new performance bargain if GM keeps the price right!

Here's a link from a discussion over at www.clubgp.com...

The deals on the 05's are likely better...

Buy Used!
My best guess is that you can land a low miles year old Grand Prix GTP for $11-12K wholesale. Any idiot can buy the nearly new Grand Prix GTP Comp G of his dreams for "$14,995?"
Re: 2006 Grand Prix GT Question
Show me where...I'll buy it. Comp Gs are pulling $18-21k depending on their mileage. Go ahead red, show me. And don't show me an ad that includes a "super sale price" with a "$3,000 minimum trade allowance included in sale price" tagline at the bottom.
Come on, show me. These cars go for over $15k at the auctions. '04 GP GTs are retailing around $15k as former daily rentals...Comp Gs are nowhere near that.
Come on red, you're so smart...show me. Just like you showed me up in that Infiniti thread. Oh wait, you never responded there either

You make it so, so easy for me...

What is sweet about the '06 GT is that with a pulley, an intake and a programmer I could be right on top of a GXP, at least in a straight line. My chrome wheels from my '01 will still fit (unlike a GXP
), my snow tires would fit 16" steel wheels I could buy for it, and I can use regular gas (GXP recommends premium). All of a sudden, at least one GM car line gives two VERY nice engine options

Upon searching on GM Autobook for our answers, I found no indication that TapShift will be an option or standard on the 2006 GP GT. As it goes for HUD, I was shocked to find the same scenario. I'm guessing they want to separate the GXP and GT even more for 2006.
Where did you find that the GT was getting the GXP front, Jason?

My sales manager just handed me the '06 Advance Product Info '06 CD ROM...I look into it and get back to you guys. And you are right about the HUD...I didn't notice the lack of that option when I ordered a couple '06 GTs
If I bought one, that was one feature I was willing to pay the $$ for
