It's about time.

I think that rear end ratio is very interesting. 2.56:1, while sixth gear is 0.67:1. It's going to turn something like 2 rpms at 70mph

The 4L65e is gone from the vette . The ONLY auto choice is the 6 speed .

Absolutely Friggin' Awesome.
I was expecting it to be an A5 with manumatic shifting. I'm all over that A6!!! In case some of you forgot ... the option of a "manumatic with paddle shifters" was brought up at that styling clinic.

Run-Flat tires $240
Head Up Display $370
Steering wheel mounted manumatic shifter $0
(note: getting this would mean no floor mounted shifter). The Audi TT was there as an example of the steering wheel shifter.
RPM programmable Shift light $40
Flat folding passenger and Rear Seats $400
Questions about the rear seat configuration were also asked. One was for 60/40 flat folding rear bench seats. Another was for rear buckets with a pass thru in the middle armrest. No mention of powertrain options .

Be intresting to see how it compares to the other paddle shifter cars out there.

Its finally about time these 6 speed auto's are coming out.. Its going to be fun to see all those project cars get them too.

Lincoln LS. It has a 4 or a 5 speed auto.

Actually, the old B-bodys came with a 2.56:1 rear end and the 4L60(E) had a .70:1 top gear - pretty close to the .67:1 6th gear of the new slushbox.

Of course, the B-bodies had an optional 3.08:1 rear end.....

It's surprising that there's no mention of an optional numerically higher rear end for the 2006 Corvette. I can only supose that a single fuel-economy oriented ratio is a good idea from the standpoint of 'economies of scales' and CAFE averages - not to mention Chevrolet's determination to gouge performance minded Corvette buyers with the overpriced Z51 package.

I've never heard of a 4 speed Lincoln LS?

I thought that every LS had the 5-speed slushbox that used to be used in the Jaguar S-type.

No price gounging here.

Don't think it's worth the extra money? Don't check the option box for Z51. A base Corvette is certainly still a "performance car".

Also, they've had to run a limited constraint on the Z51 option, and they can't build enough of them right now... so I don't think the Corvette buying public really agrees with you... (go figure )

Re: 2006 Corvette gets 6-speed auto with paddle shift ...available at start of model year

redzed, with a 6.04 ratio spread, the 2.56 rear is not just a "fuel economy" axle. Because of the extra ratios, first gear can now be over 4.00:1. Overall gearing is what ultimately matters, not just the rear end. With a 4.02:1 first gear, the overall gearing in first is 4.02 x 2.56 = 10.29:1. With a 4L65 and the 3.06 first gear, and the 3.15 "performance" axle ratio on automatic Vettes, the overall gearing in first is 3.06 x 3.15 = 9.64:1. On the other end, in 6th gear, the 0.67 (as you said, not far from the 0.70 of the 4L65) gives an overall ratio of 0.67 x 2.56 = 1.72. That creams the 0.70 x 3.15 = 2.21 of the "performance" axle 4 speed auto. It even bests the 0.70 x 2.73 = 1.91 of the regular axle with the 4 speed. In fact, the new 6 speed auto is right on top of the 0.50 x 3.42 = 1.71 of the non-Z51 6 speed manual.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Aggressive gearing in the lower gears that is way ahead of the current auto, and in fact is ahead of either version of the six speed manual, combined with tall enough gearing in 6th to rival the fuel economy of the six speed manuals too.

So it has the advantage over the "performance" axle equipped current car in terms of performance, and has the fuel economy advantage over the "standard" axle, all at once. No need for a 2nd axle ratio to go with the six speed auto, though that doesn't mean they'd never do it in the future.

Hmm, am I the only one who has mixed feelings on paddle shifters in an f-body?

Traditional stick, or adaptable automatic...
