2005 JD Power Vehicle Dependability

http://www.jdpower.com/cc/global/pr/search.asp

Open the 2005 VDS link...

Badabing! Not too shabby! Lincoln passed Buick by a very slim margin. Toyo-Honda about even with Mercury!

Remember, this is based off of 2002 models.

Here's the link I think he intended to post:
http://www.jdpower.com/news/releases/vds2005089.asp

This, to me, is a much more relavent survey... how a vehicle holds up over the first three years of ownership... not just the first 3 months.

Show me a survey with how the cars are holding up after 8 years and 120,000 miles and I'll be even more impressed.

The shorter your term of measurement the more you're measuring small slip-ups rather than actual quality engineering and money put into durable parts.

I'm very impressed by Buick overtaking Toyota and Infiniti, and would as a result likely consider one in addition to a Toyota my next time around if their predicted resale value was decent and if their interiors start looking a little nicer (right now despite whatever "quality" there is to them, they just look like patch-work... especially in the center stack.

Mercedes quality has really slipped for the past 6 or 7 years. The old S-Class had a more solid feel to it than the new one. The interior is of a much higher quality in the old 1990's models when compared to the new ones(that doesn't mean it looks better, but the plastics and leather feel nicer.)

It will be interesting to see in 10 years if the newer Mercedes hold together as well as the old ones have. Look on ebay and you'll see Benzes that are 10+ years old with 200k miles that still look mint.

The truth is that none of the German makers are stong in quality . They are strong in reputation and prestige but not quality.

They used to be better until they started putting all that electronic crap into their cars without thouroughly testing it to make sure it was reliable. Now its like an arms race, if Benz puts a expresso machine in their cars, then BMW and Audi will have to follow suit. I think they rush this type of stuff into the market so fast they haven't figured out how to make a good cup of expresso, but hey, it does have an expresso machine in it now.

Is Mercedez that bad, or do the owners demand more than the average car owner would? Same for Kia, since they have the 10 year/100,000 warranty... if its free, fix it ll day long

LOL... didn't notice it until you mentioned it.

I just lost a lot of faith in that survey.

I know right?

I get so damn tired of hearing people praising Nissans for their quality. The things are junk and they are slipping. Their numbers from a few years ago were better. Everybody I know that has had an Altima...has had problems with it. Just because it's from Japan don't mean it's reliable. And apparently just because it's from Toyota doesn't mean it's more reliable than a Mercury by much.

But this is good news. Hopefully if this keeps up for another 2-3 years it will start making people realize that they can't bash American cars on reliability any more. Detriot just needs to keep the quality up. Keep coming out with appealing designs and keep the power coming...and they should be well on their way to coming back.
