2005.5 Corvette Z06 Gets 427-cid "LS7"

From "The Buzz" - July 2004, GM High-Tech Performance
We haven't seen any photos yet, but news continues to trickle out about the next extra-performance model of the Corvette. Slated for release in mid-2005 as an '06 model, we know it will be powered by a 427-cubic-inch, all-aluminum Gen III engine named LS7. We hear words like "three-valve cylinder heads," and "dry sump oiling system" are being thrown around. "Clutchless manual transmission" was also mentioned, but we can't yet confirm any of these rumors surrounding the 427's technical details. Nor can we confirm a horsepower rating approaching 575.
I know some of this has been discussed here before, but seeing it print makes it a little more "exciting."

575 Horses!?!

Now if only GM will stuff that drivetrain in a "special" Chevy Coupe that's coming down the pipe in a few years and badge it with a three-letter designation ending with "8" and beginning with the last letter in the alphabet.

I would gloat for years on end if the new Z06 blows the GT into the weeds for less than $70,000.

Tasty little phrases:

"Ford's best.... not quite enough."

"And for only twice as much, you can buy a slower Ford GT."

Any idea how much more that would cost than a reg 6-speed?

My alphabet ends with "S", and you can make an 8 out of two of them.

Although this was posted a few weeks ago, I just had a thought. What if there are 2 ZO6's? One with a "lesser" motor that pumps out 500 hp and the top dog ZO6 that is the 427-575hp motor? Do you think this is possible(like the "SS" strategy) or would they just give it another name?

What I'm talking about is a special "race" version of the new Chevy Coupe... you know, for sports sedan class racing.

Of course: If speed is all you want, you'd be better off modifiying a camaro. It wouldn't take $70,000 to blow a Ford GT into the weeds. It wouldn't even take half that. Heck, GT hangs door to door with a Saleen S7, and for for 1/2-1/3rd the price, but i'd hardly call them equals.

No doubt, it is a much better performance value, but the two won't be cross-shopped. The GT will get its buyers, as will the z06.

That and i hope it doesn't cost near 70g's. Hopefully, nothing more than 60g's considering the outgoing c5 z06 was around 50g's. Anyways, those 2002 and 2003 z06's are looking mighty good nowadays. You can pisk up a low mileaged example for around 35g's.

Why not call the 427ci version "ZL1"; much like the 69 427ci ZL1 vettes? Sounds much better than confusing us with two different z06's.

I don't think the Vette will get a 3rd engine, and if it does get a 3rd I'm betting it is a forced induction V8

If I remember right, only 2 ZL1 Vettes were built. I think ZL1 should be saved for the Camaro. The Vette can use ZR1

Last I heard...

The LS7 will have 7.0L ,2V per cylinder , 500-ish HP , power the Z06 and cost about $60K.

That's not to say that another Corvette couldn't have more than that.

I know about their rarity, but it seems very fitting. 69 ZL1 had a high performance pushrod 427ci v8. This rumored vette as a high performance 427ci pushrod v8 as well. When i think ZR1, i think Dohc 350ci.
