Zl1 may have ties to camaro too, but i doubt we'll see a 500+ hp 427ci c-car anytime soon...from the factory anyways.
Either way, ZL1 has always meant 427ci to me, be it in a camaro or vette, and i see it as a perfect suit seeing as how this rumored vette is supposed to pack 427ci.
Whatever they decide to call it
.
I wouldn't care if it had a new Z##. I hate how everyone feels the need to go retro with the naming of new Vettes and Camaros.

OK when the hell did you get the Cobra?
You'll prolly need the KB or Whipple to run over this theoretical Z06. At 3000lbs and 575hp it'll be running 10s.
It would be nice to see a Z06 with at least GT/Viper matching numbers, better if it puts them in their rearview mirror. Its hard for me to think that with GM on this semi-performance kick they'd sit idle and watch Ford/DCX get ahead in the HP game, esp with the potential that was never even closed to tapped in the LSx engines.
I think it would be awesome for GM to build this car, but I also highly doubt it'll be a 575hp offering. That's a helluva' jump from the 400hp base C6. I'd bet more along the lines of 450-475hp. That's really all they'd need to put it on equal footing (or better) with a Viper, which is their goal. That much power would also likely put it ahead of the next generation Cobra, which will continue to be several hundred pounds heavier.

Beyond that, let's wait and see...

True, but ZL1 just sounds more badass imo. Maybe because it conjurs images of the ZL1 vette (the baddest of all the vettes imo). And seeing as how there was a ZL1 vette with an all-aluminum 427ci pushrod, what better fitting name? You get my drift?

The aluminum bigblock motor got the name.
I work with a fellow that had numerous distinctions, a couple of which are owning one of the first 20 Z28's and owning one of the 2 ZL1 Corvettes.. which was a serious piece... with a far too small radiator.
Anyway...look for "L" to describe an engine, and "Z" to describe a total package < as in engine and suspension goodies >.
7 liters isn't necessarily 427 c.i., but I guess there's a mathematician here, maybe two.

THe Lingenfelter 427 is actually 427.6 ci, they rounded it down b/c 427 sounds cooler than 428.
(someone correct me if I'm a little off on the 427.6)

and yes, 427 is 7.0.
Just like the Hemi 345, LS1/6 346, and SBC/TPI/LT1 350's are all 5.7 liters.
I don't care what they call it personally, although LS7 would be nice, as it was supposed to be the bad *ss of them all back in '70 or so. Wasn't it more or less a 454ci version of the L-88? Anyway, it never happened. It'd be nice for the LS7 to finally see the light of day. But as to what they'd call the "package" for this particular engine, Z06 works for me.
Back in the L-88 days, there were no packages to speak of centered around the engine, so we just call it an L-88 Vette. ZL-1 was the same. Starting the next year ZR-1 became an option package which featured the LT-1 engine, although you could get the LT-1 on its own if you wanted to. In '71 the ZR-2 was available utilizing the one year only LS-6, but again, you could get the LS-6 by itself if you wanted to.
Wouldn't it be great if they still did things like that? You could get the package, or you could just get just the engine if you wanted it. I'd take a C6 Z51coupe w/ the LS7...I could do w/out the Z-- wheels, exhaust, body style, black interior, and limited option list. Sure a Z-- would be faster, but I'd take the coupe body style and options over the road racer look.

The ZL1 was a big block 427.
The new Z06 motor is ~427 cid... but its not a big block.
Who cares what sounds badass or not... just call it Z06.
Now for the $2 question. When was Z06 first used on a Corvette?
