Exclamation 2004 Indianapolis 500 pacecar

Chevrolet has it this year, and I'm still assuming that it's going to be Corvette. But there's some indication it's going to be the Impala.

Temper your shock, in 2001 the pacecar was an Olds Bravada 4 door SUV, in 1990 it was a Chevy Baretta, & in '87 it was a Chrysler Lebaron.

Over at Blueovalnews.com the word is it's going to be an Impala SS. Better than what we've seen in the past, but still :blah:

Shouldn't it be a convertible?

why the big surprise??? two years ago was the Vette for the 50th, and the C6 wouldn't be out yet (not that THAT has ever stopped them from using it) but what other car would you have rather have???

Perhaps using the Silverado SS might have been a better choice, but I don't think using the Impala SS was a bad choice. Becides, I've heared that the Impy ss's and the MC SSSC'c have not been selling well, perhaps this is a move to get more people into one.

I would have used the Silverado SS or SSR. Too bad the C6 isn't ready yet.

I think that the SSR would have been a much better choice. I can't imagine an Impalla SS with pace car stickers all over it

Isn't this already out in showrooms?

We have 2004 Impalas with the Indy SS Limited Edition Pkg installed.

I see one listed for sale with that option. Says "Indy SS Limited Edition Pkg"

Doesn't sound very interesting

I remember back in the 80s they had to modify the pace cars enignes to produce more power for the track. Those Breattas had like 280hp from a N/A 3.4L V6

Here's something I never understood.

Why exactly would you have to modify a car to be a pace car?

Does it really need to do 0-60 in less than 9 seconds? How fast do the cars go when there's a yellow flag out?

It has to have enough power, suspension and brakes....to cruise effortlessly at around 120mph ....for extended periods of time.
