2003 N.A Concept Vehicle of the Year

I think IZ28 will be disappointed with the 2005 Mustang running away with the production preview category award. GM did very well with some of their designs getting recognized. Overall, i thought the 2003 year was good for American Automakers. I hope 2004 proves to be even a better year. Hopefully, a 5th gen concept will be showcased alongside the c6 for 2004.

Atlanta, Georgia - The second annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year awards were announced yesterday during a ceremony at the Atlanta International Auto Show. A jury of 35 automotive journalists from throughout North America selected the winners from 32 Concept Vehicles and six Production Preview Vehicles that made a North American debut during the 2003 Auto Show season.

Hosted by the South East Automotive Media Organization, the awards recognize those vehicles most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry.

New this year was the Production Preview category for those vehicles based on a model that has already been announced or planned for production. Notable among the strong competitors in this category was the Dodge Magnum SRT8, but when the final votes were counted, the Ford Mustang GT galloped ahead with a clear lead. "The Ford Mustang is a great part of our heritage. Feedback from the public, automotive press and dealers told us we had to bring the Mustang back," said Ford President and COO Nick Scheele.

The Concept Car category presented the widest field of competitors in this year's competition with over 20 entrants. Among those that ran away from the pack were the Aston Martin Vantage, Infiniti Triant, and Mercury Messenger. The award in the Concept Car category went to the Cadillac Sixteen. According to juror Jim Scoutten, "the Sixteen is exactly what a concept should be - bigger than life in length, power, and appointments... This car is crowd stirring art."

In the Truck & SUV category, the race was so close that as little as two votes would have given the top score to any of three out of the top four finalists. Emerging with a narrow lead over the Dodge Kahuna and the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the winner of the 2003 Concept Truck of the Year was the Chevrolet Cheyenne. Juror Michael Bettencourt said, "It has brains (the easily accessible bed) to go along with its underhood muscle and smooth looks. Who says style and pickups can't go hand in hand?"

The Specialty Concept category recognizes those vehicles outside the normal definition of car or truck, as well as those vehicles where the technology and not the package is the key story. Although the Dodge Tomahawk motorcycle and Ford's ultra-recyclable Model U both attracted considerable attention, the future vision of General Motors' Hy-Wire finished with a clear lead as 2003 Specialty Concept Vehicle of the Year. "A new automotive architecture and maybe the first computer-age car," said juror Ashly Knapp. "Hold the pistons make mine electric!"

Taking top honors as the "2003 Most Significant Concept Vehicle of the Year," was the General Motors Hy-Wire. Here again the competition between the segment winners was fierce and just a few votes could have changed the outcome in any direction. "Though the close competition made for some tough choices, it's evidence of the many truly great ideas and designs incorporated in all of the finalist vehicles," said jury director Tom Kelley. Thumbs up

They deserve it, it's a really eyecatching and very good design!

Some people here will most definately deride and attempt to degrade the new Mustang's design as retro, or unoriginal, or whatever else, but the truth is, the public seems to LOVE it, other designers seem to LOVE it (even Bob Lutz seems to really like the design ), and by the reactions it's getting, and the fact that it will be considerably quicker, Ford definately has a winner here.

As far as it's detractors, to paraphrase my current saying from below:

"Selling the new Mustangs without these guys design approval is like going deer hunting without an accordian!"

Appreciate the mention. I expected the M*stang concept to take it. It really had no good competition from GM or any1 else. Especially, in its category.

Exclamation

I have YET to meet ANYONE in my Camaro club of nearly 200 members that doesn't not only not hate the Mustang concept, but I'd venture a guess that the most that have expressed their opinion have actually spoken very highly of it and some even mentioning a sincere interest in buying one ...........Makes you wonder if the guys at Chevy will sleep very well at night......at least for the next 2-3 years that is................

It's a no brainer the '05 Mustang is a hit, when you style it heavily like a 60's Mustang everyone gets that warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling. So whatever. I can quite honestly say I'm not a huge fan of it but if most are, so be it. Enjoy!

Can I join your club so you can say you know someone who hates it? But it was the car of the show that will see production, cant argue with that. Its hard to get really excited about the GTO when it doesnt even seem like GM is all that excited. The Stang got a huge roll out and Pontiac was just kinda like "Oh yea here's our GTO."

The Sixteen really is how they describe it. Im comming around on the looks and its just like, ok 16 cylinders, 1000 hp/tq, and a giant body. Yes. Cadillac is finally giving GM nothing but good news and appealing to the younger market. ****, if GM can move Caddy down the age scale think of what they can do with Chevy if they really put their hearts into it (and not let Dewoo do it, lol).

OMG could I be any more in love with the Mustang Concept? I know that I shouldn't(I'm a Camaro-lover for life) but really, that car is awesome...
