2.0 DI turbocharged ecotec

Does anyone have a clue if this is gonna be replacing the current supercharged ecotec's in the Ion Redline and Cobalt SS . Or is it gonna be a Sky/Solstice exclusive ?

I HOPE so.

In the sport compact market, turbo is king and the Ion/SS would be better marketed with a turbo rather than a blower given the turbo's huge popularity in this class. I thought going with the S/c'er was a mistake to begin with, especially when they already had a turbocharged ecotec in use in the Saab's.

^^ What he said.

But then again I wouldn't mind if the turbo variants were limited to the "good" divisions like Pontiac

I've seen this one answered a lot lately

YES, turbo DI 2.0 will be coming to Cobalt, Ion Redline, all around, as long as Ion is still around...

I heard a lot of effort was put into getting the torque curve "just right." Like a table top baby!!

Re: 2.0 DI turbocharged ecotec

You know, driving an Evo for 3 years, I was in the "turbo only" camp. Having owned the Ion Redline and putting a smaller pulley on it, my views have changed. Where the Evo makes tons of power, it also has lag and no low end power. The super charger, on the other hand, is completely linear, which is great for modulating throttle and not falling off boost, and makes decent power with a $50 pulley.

The s/c is not a dyno queen, though, and will never make huge power. There's evos out there making 600+hp. Of course they dont spool up untill after 6,000 rpms, but thats always left out of the discussion.

I don't know about future DI applications, but the current turbo 2.0t in the 9-3 makes nice tq figures.

Saab turbo 2.0 ecotec- 221lb-ft tq @ 2,500rpms
Cobalt S/c 2.0 ecotec- 200lb-ft tq @ 4,400rpms

Both engines are boosted to about 12psi from the factory. I'd be intrested in a dyno but wouldn't be surprised if the turbo 2.0 had a flatter tq curve.

Anyone wana figure what we are looking at, power wise? I figure 270. I would think that Mazda is currently looking at the turbo 2.3 that is in the Mazda6, and in there it makes 276hp. I think thats the goal GM needs to aim for.
And on that note, A 270HP COBALT SS!! HOLY ****E!! I assume that it will be detuned to 250ish. If and when Mazda3 get the turbo 2.3, then it will be a battle for the top!!

I would also assume that with DI, that torque will increase by a butt load. And read reviews of the Astra'sVXR 2.0 Turbo engine, and how Europe car mags are in love with the raw power.

Re: 2.0 DI turbocharged ecotec

Another twist to the story that may turn the aftermarket on edge is the emergence of "Twincharging." (puting a turbo before the supercharger) There are several kits coming out for the SS/IRL that do just this. This gives you the big power of a turbo with the low end, linearity of a s/c.

Its much easier to do this with a car that comes stock with a supercharger. They've been doing them with Mini Coopers and VW even does it from the factory now.

At this point, FWD becomes stupid. They need to come out with an AWD version. Our Ion Redlines probably in the 220-230hp range right now and it struggles for traction in 2nd.

Another thing that they will have to figure out at these power levels are engine mounts. Its either:
  • soft + smooth (percieved quality) = major wheelhop
    or
  • hard + rough = no wheelhop

Too complex and expensive.

I'd rather see the use of a VTG (variable turbine geometry) turbo. This i've heard eliminates lag and gives optomim boost in both low-end and high-end. This tech has long been used in deisel engines, but is now starting to see use in gasoline engines (like the new 911 turbo). I think we'll see wide use of VTG tech in turbocharged gas cars in the years to come.

In the 911 turbo, VTG tech allows the elimination of the twin-turbo setup since it is not really needed.

Here, ill help.

Ill let someone else post the Saab's graph. I was under the impression they(future colbalt SS and Ion) will be getting a 2.4 turbo. But I havent been paying attention
