Ken S

You're like the funniest dude this week. I read your response and almost fell out of my chair. Awesome.

5.7 LT1, 5.6 LS1 I think. Without trying to start a fight, just in disagreement here. If the cobraR motors were so hot, I think they would have dropped them in 03s. Something must have stopped ford from doing this. Or maybe just leap frogging that motor all together was the deal. I don't know.

It's not GM just dropped a 5.7. They've been using them for years. I f-body, and older muscle cars before. Way before ford dropped that 4.6 in 96.

Truthfully I've wondered why ford hasn't dropped the 351 in stock mustangs. There is nothing you can say to make me believe that wasn't the thing to do. You know how many ford boys wish they had dropped that puppy in 96. instaed they got the 4.6.

Stock the 03 cobra is nice with the blower. 02, not really. I'm sure top ford guys knew this in 2000 and figured on a plan of action to get some power out of that motor. Throw a blower on it. Without it old LT1s would still be competitive with them and LS1s would still get them. I can face the fact that they are faster than f-cars and even Z06s with $700-$1500. Ok. But if you've ever wondered what they'd do without the blower. I refer you to the 2002. Maybe 10-15 more horses, maybe. Not worth messing with as far as cash goes.

The funniest thing is I saw a FF&MM cover awhile ao and saw death match. 02SS vs. 03cobra. If they where really thinking they would have tested the same year models and called that the death match. Maybe because it lost. But no real reason, Nothing new there. They like the mustang. Mustang has better aerogonmics(sp?), better ride, better fit and finish, but the Z28 is still faster. With comparisons like that, you could compare the last Supra to a cobra or some other car they don't make anymore.

The reason they limited the 5.4 to just the Cobra R in the mustang was probably due to cost and fitment. The last thing anybody needed was another 40+ thousand dollar mustang. The 351 as good as it was, was probably considered too old tech. I think ford ditched them becuase it wouldn't meet CAFE standards or emissions or something like that. They felt modular was the way to go. The 4.6L Dohc never disappointed. 320hp and 317lb-ft of Tq, and mid 13's aint bad at all.

I kind of find it funny how you said that the "GT's are still SLOW in comparison". Isn't High 13's/low 14's what the typical stock Lt-1 runs? Sure, it's not ls-1 numbers but far from "slow". Slap on a couple of bolt ons and you're not far from Ls-1 territory (1/4 mile wise).

I kind of agree with you though. They've kind of left the GT behind. There's no real reason why there should be a 165hp difference between it and the 03 Cobra. That's just too big of a gap.

High 13s used to be fast, but the bar has been raised by the LS1s. High 14's used to be fast too.

Ford could have made the 351 pass CAFE laws. GM made the 350 do it. I know you don't think ford lacks smarts and the R&D to make it happen the way GM did. Although from my side it looks like ford threw in the towel. GM didn't. They bet that people would continue to buy a motor that may not be able to compete with little or no mods and they won. I friends with a ford dude in my building because he's a car guy. Even he admits that 96-98 4.6s sucked. But he's a 5.0 guy. His car will wind up being faster than mine, but that's cool. He just dropped 10G's on motor alone. I can't wait for him to get it going.

I don't think ford left the GT behind. This is a typical ford deal. Nothing new about that. It's the 03 cobra that ford stepped up on. Why make the GT fast when people will buy them anyway.

I got all the mods from friends when they upgraded so I have aobut 1200 in mods. There are faster bolt on cars than mine in my town too. That is not a far cry from 11s with about the same bolt ons at the cobra will need and these fast bolt on cars are pretty common around here.

Perhaps it's easier than I thought, yet still look at how many things you had to change. And if you go by the prices that our sponsors offer (you buy new, not used), your mods will total around or more than $1500. The thing with the cobra is you don't even have to change headers. Only catback exhaust, better intake, and pulley. I don't know how much this would cost, but I'm sure under $1000. And the Cobra will be getting better times, it will not just get 11.99, I am under the impression it will do more like 11.7 This is just pure speculation, so take it for what it's worth.

Is it THAT common to get LS1 down to low 12's with such few mods? Quite impressive indeed. I'm not accustomed to seeing such numbers, myself driving LT1

A lid, pulley, cutout, converter and slicks will get a lot of LS1 automatics very close to an 11.99..not all will hit that but a few will. And that's about $1500 in mods.

Or for an M6, substitute a cam for the converter, you're comming out actually cheaper that way and getting to the same point ET-wise, There are a handful of LS1's with the stock heads doing cam swaps and getting 400 rwhp. Now, of course they have a full exhaust w/headers, but still, that's potential my friends!!

Nothing really. Same old shieeet. I've just been busy with work, school, and am currently in the process of moving. You??

Why haven't we been on the opposite sides? Don't know . Guess you could say i'm slowly turning into an f-bod head. I guess the beatings iv'e received in the streets from countless 4th gens were enough to change some of my previous views.

Low 12's on an ls-1 is fairly easy with just a few mods but it's not exactly as easy as with the S/c cobra. Just look at the trap speeds. I think the guys from 5.0 mag were trapping in at 116mph with the exhaust and K&N. A pulley change would put it over 120mph. Not bad for less then a grand spent.

Well I've been working and starting a new project. As you can see in my sig, I've been playing with DSMs. I like them allot. Turbo 4 bangers can be fun, specailly with AWD. Take this 300ZX tonight. He was messing around and got smashed out of the hole. I think he was N\A.

Yes.. this subject is indeed tired...Ive seen dyno numbers(around 390 rwhp w/ not much more then a catback),stock quarter mile times(12.3@113), and videos of stock 03 Cobras KILLING c5's w/ what looks like no effort at all. U say slap a blower on a LS1..go ahead, one u have no warranty and two much more then 8 psi on a stock engine you'll have a exploding LS1 shortly after...The 03 Cobra engine is built for the blower and can handle MUCH more boost then its stock setting ...I believe you'll be seeing these things in the 10's very soon.. So as far as the LS1 is concerned id say svt's got that covered...Lets see what c6 and the new engine bring to the table.

All I have to say about this is LIMA BEANS.

OK HERE IT IS. The LS1 is the best V8 OHV motor. Some LT1 guys don't like it. That's calld LS1 envy. It is so much easier to make a LS1 fast than a LT1. So what.

As for the ford. I never said it wasn't a fast\good car. Just look what They had to do. Throw a blower on it. Again, if you don't believe me, I again refer you to the 02 cobra. Now we have the warranty arguement. To make a cobra take MUCH more boost the warranty would be voided, unless you think ford mechanics are stupid and aren't smart enough to see you've been boosting more than stock boost. There goes your warranty.

10s, thats cool. 10s stock motor would be impressive. Now you've got me wondering how much that ford motor can take.

I wonder what you mean by "easier". Not a flame, I love the LS1, wish I had one. The LT1 starts with less HP, but there's just as much potential in our motors as the LS1's. Some would argue even moreso, because of the iron block. I've heard that once LS1's push 800 hp they have a problem keeping the heads on the block.
