Maybe it had some dealer add-ons (appearance pkg, etc.) that pushed it up to $24K. A $24K N/A Cobalt SS is a terrible investment.

That's what it all comes down to. I know my cousin bought a brand new 2000 Civic SI and it has depreciated from whatever the 20k it was to 10k or something now. But he takes pride in the fact it only had been driven up on the truck and off it at the lot. Personally, I wouldn't mind having a new car but having it depreciate that much is just too much for me to stomach (atleast at my age and financial standing right now). So I'll just continue to buy used cars. Heck, my Z28 has depreciated about 500$ in 2 years, which isn't too bad I suppose, but only putting 2000 miles on it from then to now is what gets me. Oh well, it's still fun.

I completely, undeniably agree with the above...despite the fact neither of my current cars were purchased new I couldn't afford a new Z28 when I bought mine in 2001, and I can't buy a new one now anyway. Furthermore, while the '06 GP has grown on me substantially to the point where I really, really want a GT or GXP, I thought the '04s were abominable...hence the '01 purchase in Fall '03. I simply hated the new design until they began tweaking it. Now, I'd love a new one. When I had a buyer for my car a few weeks back, I didn't even consider replacing it with used. I agree...driving away with my '02 Grand Am GT when it was brand new was worth it.

Unless its a 3rd gen, or say a 35th SS, I will never buy another used car. Sure, you pay more...but you get the piece of mind of the warranty, the fact that you know exactly whats been done with your car (since you did it all!!), and besides...I run 'em in the ground too! All of my cars have had over 100k when I sold them, save the Grand Am...and I sold that because I hated it.

Reminds me of the time my stepson turned 16 and he told me what he really wanted was a 69 Camaro.

I haven't given up on this generation.

That doesn't matter cause it's not a Camaro.

Haha when I first started looking at cars I went straight to the Camaro and Firebird. That was when I was 15. I have an itch now for an IROC tho. I need to find one.

I've come close...us echo boomers really, really suck when it comes to taste in cars. While I've managed to save my fiance (in the 2 1/2 years we've been together, she's gone from lusting after a Jetta to a 3rd gen ), my 31 year old co-worker is insisting she wants a new Civic. Its getting ugly around that cubicle, as I sit next to her.

I will be throwing paper clips randomly at her throughout every work day until she lets me bring her to test drive a Cobalt. Hey, at least she can't say I have a vested interest in her purchase, and am trying to sell her a G6

Re: The $24,000 dilemma.

To top it off, I'm so lost with pontiacs lettering/numbering, I dont think Id look to purchase one for the fear of sounding like an idiot to some salesman that otherwise wouldnt know half as much about cars as I. "Yea I want one of those grand am replacement G something coupes with the comp G, in a supercharged GTP, which is GP with a GT package in the G6 for 1 G less than that mustang GT right?" WTF
"G" I'm not sure..
I guess they have trouble coming up with names nowadays, or just names that don't P.O. someone...

I do my part by letting kids hear the big V8 rumble by and see what a just mild one can do!
