The $24,000 dilemma.
The $24,000 dilemma.
It was a beautiful morning Sunday, so one of my boys and I went for a walk. We walked about a mile and a half to the local Chevy dealer. One of the cars we saw there was a N/A Cobalt SS coupe. It had some options and stickered for $24K and some change.
A couple of blocks away is the local Ford dealer. My son wanted to see if they had any new Mustangs there. They did. All V6's. But they also had two Mustangs with the Pony package. They come with 17" Bullitt wheels, different grill and all the Pony trim. Kind of a neat V6 package, actually. Anyway, with afew options they stickered for $24K and some change....almost exactly the same price as the Cobalt.
I guess you know where I'm going. Which one is more worth the money?
For the same price you could have a well equipped Solstice or G6 GTP.
And for another G-note you could have a Mustang GT or GP GT. So why even bother with the first two?

Re: The $24,000 dilemma.
I am completely shocked an N/A Cobalt SS coupe can get to $24k...the s/c ones can barely top $25k, so I'm a little confused to say the least...
Anyway, I know what you mean about that price range. You can either get a loaded lower line car, or a basic upper line model. Right now, ignoring the Mustang, the next best bang for the buck is a GP GT, IMO. $26,700 base price, all your basic power goodies and ABS are standard. You get a $1k rebate, so with a little haggling you're less than $25k out the door, with a 260hp engine with a ton of potential, nice 17" wheels, decent handling, nice ride etc. What else for $25k gives that much for the $$$?? I can't really think of anything. Sure, a G6 GTP is $24,800, and has the same $1k rebate, so theoretically the G6 is probably $2k cheaper if you can find a dealer willing to deal. But to save $2k, while you get a nicer interior you lose some size, utility and the blower. Hence the reason a few weeks back I myself considered a GT for a new car (until realizing what I have is good enough, and I'm doing nothing until I can either afford a GXP, or wait and see what January brings
)
So yeah, why even bother with those? I tend to agree. A n/a Cobalt SS is not worth the $$ compared to a G6 GT, then consider a GTP is barely $1,700 more than a GT, but wait...for another $2k you're in a blown GT. I have to admit though, there's a lot of these situations in the car market today
I think it boils down to what you want, what you need and what you can see plunking real $$ down for.

Re: The $24,000 dilemma.
Think of it this way, the Mustang will help your son 'pull more chicks'... he will probably be eternally grateful to you for your 'guidance'.
As much as I love my GMs... the Mustang is a 'no brainer' assuming you want to part with $24K.
Good luck anyways!

Actually, he still thinks girls are gross. He's only 10. But he completely agrees with your assesment on the Mustang.
Re: The $24,000 dilemma.
The Mustang is a lot cooler but after spending a week in a Mustang I think it is a piece of junk the Cobalt has a much nicer interior and is probably put together much better.

On the surface, the mustang is the most agressive and sporty looking, so I'm sure it would get my pick anyway, but in addition to that:
I'm in the minority of car buyers, along with most of this site, but I only see one RWD car in your comparision, and thus I only see one competitor.
To go even farther, I only see one V8 competitor, but I didnt even need to reach that part to make the decision.
To top it off, I'm so lost with pontiacs lettering/numbering, I dont think Id look to purchase one for the fear of sounding like an idiot to some salesman that otherwise wouldnt know half as much about cars as I. "Yea I want one of those grand am replacement G something coupes with the comp G, in a supercharged GTP, which is GP with a GT package in the G6 for 1 G less than that mustang GT right?" WTF
There is no wonder why Mustang is doing so well.
