Z06 or cobra for autocrossing??
If your dad has that kind of money and wants a american V8 a '99 cobra R model would be a good choice. Moter trend got one to pull over 1 g with a bone stock one and made 371 rwhp and went 12.7.
Why do you people keep quoting 1/4 mile times? He asked what would be a better Auto-x car, not a drag car.
In auto-x HP is almost a non issue, hell I've been beat by cars with less than half the RWHP I have.
What really matters is weight, and how well the car transistions. In both those catagories the Z06 stomps the 03 Cobra (or any Mustang for that matter).

Unless there's been a significant suspension redesign on the new Fords, they've got a strut type setup... not optimal for handling. The Z06 is a reasonably priced supercar, and as such it's pretty much in a class by itself. If I could afford to buy one and mod it I'd buy one tomorrow... but sadly I'd be in lease land to afford one and that would SUCK (I can't keep my hands off a car once I buy one).
I have to laugh at the 99 Cobra R. Ford builds this 50K Mustang(still on the same 1979 chassis) and claims it is a Corvette beater. Where is it on the racetrack? Isn't that why Ford built it? They sit in speculators/collectors garages. They certainly don't compete. At least racers know what will win and what won't. I saw people in Autoweek trying to dump these things for up to 75K but now they are happy just to get their money back. Sure the car had great numbers on the skidpad and in the nice controlled environment Ford tested them in. But the reality is they are still not even close to a Z06 in overall performance and in competition. I have owned two Mustangs(a 96 GT and a 98LX) so I am not biased. Just can't believe what they are trying to get for these new cars on a chassis they refuse to update. But people still buy them. Go figure.

If your dad ever plans on selling whichever car he buys, I'd imagine that the Z06 would retain a higher percentage of its value than an 03 Cobra. Thus an unmodified Z06 would probably cost him less money to own than a cobra. Plus, there will be lots more people (more demand) willing to shell out that kind of money for a used vette than they would for a used, supercharged mustang.
He would probably be much happier owning a vette because, in my opinion, a mustang is still a high schoolers car no matter how much it costs.
Lastly, if the Z06 is just too expensive, I'd much rather have a hardtop Z28/Firebird for mid $20k before I bought a $38k cobra. Even better would be a B4C version with some of the 1LE stuff (if they still come with the 1LE stuff that is).
