Post Tire question

Looking at a 3 season tire as I have Blizzacks.
Looking at 225/55-16 as I need the higher load rating (lots of towing)
Contenders:
#1 - BFG G-Force KDW - Tire-Rack recommended.
#2 - Bridgestone 730 ( I've heard it gets noisy when it is wearing unevenly)
#3 - Avon ZZ1 - Salesman has them on his Ricer, but he said they were better than the lower grade version of the Toyo. I've had good luck autocrossing with Avon brand tires in the past.
#4 - Nokian NRV - Unique asymetric unidirectional tread
#5 - Toyo TPT - NOT the lousy one.(44i?)
#6 - Bridgestone SO-3 - $$$$$$

Ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the responses.
I also recieved these from the SHO list:

"I am very happy with the Firestone SZ-50. The replacement for them is the SZ-50 EP which is the same carcass as the Bridgestone Pole Position S-03."

"The Yoko A520 and AVS Intermediates are good summer tires with great
handling, <snip>

I LOVED my Pirelli P7000 SuperSports,<snip>

I also like the Nitto 450 Extremes I have on the 911. GREAT in the wet, and they look cool (look as nice as the P7000s).

In the S03 price range is also the Yoko AVS Sport and the Firestone SZ50 EPs."

The second comment is from a fellow I know well and has owned 3 SHOs. We also test-drive the Boxter when it first came out and were not impressed with it's performance. We bottomed the suspension in a parking lot turn!

But if you're going only 225 55 16 and doing a lot of towing... then you don't really need sticky tires?

the RE730s are very good and decently priced, but don't know if they come in 55 16

heck, the kumho ecsta tires are even cheaper!

I autocross and I tow (I'm a homeowner as of last year). What a combination.

I also wanted 225/50-16's to correct my speedometer and give me a slight gearing advantage. That size generally supports about 120 lbs LESS per tire than OEM or 225/55-16. That's why I had to make my size decision.

I've never tried Khumos and have heard mixed reviews on autocrosses. Then again, I'm not familiar with their product line either as I had not considered them in my research.

I will look into the kumho ecsta.

Thanks again!

Thumbs up

My father has Ecsta's on his 91 Vette and they are every bit as good as the BFG's he used to have. Once my GCS's are dead I'm gonna have a set of Victoracers mounted on these rims (slp take offs) and get a set of WS6 rims and slap on a set of Ecsta's.

I just picked up a set of Yoko AVS Intermediates for the new SS. They grip as good if not better than the F1's I was ripping up every month at the autocross. They only cost $59 though. I thought I got a steal from tire rack. When I had them mounted I appologized to the shop manager for not buying them from him because of the great deal I got. (I do a lot of business there.) He looked it up and his price was $49 from Tire Rack. He could have given me the same deal. I haven't autocrossed on them yet. But they feel pretty good on the street.

Now I have autocrossed on them. Very good traction. And it rained all day! I won GT stock (rear wheel drive V8's) by over 2 seconds on a 70 second course. I'm very happy with them.

Where did you get Yoko AVS Intermediates? I thought that they stopped making them a year ago, as the TR did not carry them anymore. I concur that these are amazing "cheap" performance tires. I pulled easy sub-5-second 0-60mph runs on these when new. My only complaints are that the rubber compound on the 315mm size got very hard after 10,000 miles, while the 275mm size remained sticky until the end. They also tend to feel much more "darty" on uneven roads as the tread wears off.

Thats probably why they were $59

I've seen some sizes there a few months ago, although did not know they had 'our' sizes still in stock.

I love those tires, I'm sorry they got dropped

Well, I ordered the G-Force KDW's from Sams Club. Mounting and Balancing, Road Hazard - all 4 for $605 including Tax.
It's about $80 more that the Tire Rack (without Mounting/Balancing), but I get a R.H with them.

The S-03's were extremely tempting and were not much more $$ (<$100 difference at a local Bridgestone dealer) but the BFG's come with a R.H. and the Bridgestones do not.

With the miles I do, it's better I have one!

186K miles and counting on the '91 SHO

I'm sitting here going "How the hell did you do that for $605?"...

And then I remember that's 225/50/16 That's like two tires for me in the KDW's, so I went with the Ecsta MX's (about $100 installed and aligned).

Enjoy!

Ed Laplant just won the Northwest region national tour a couple of weeks ago on Kumho's in a stock 95 Z28. He was using the stock size too.

Bummer, I just checked Tire Rack and they don't have the 275/40/17 Yoko AVS Intermediates in stock anymore. I could really use a cheap set of street tires too.
