Spohn TA and Rod End Clunk
Spohn TA and Rod End Clunk
I went with a rod end instead of a poly for the front of the torque arm. I finally got done installing the TA last night and driving it today I hear a very slight clunk on acceleration/deceleration. It feels like it's coming from right under me which leads me to think it may be at the front of the torque arm. I've gone through and tightened the back bolts pretty tight and the front one I've tightened pretty snug so the rod end can still move.
Any thoughts?

I have the same arm. Can you hear your diff spinning? I hear it spin down when stopping... I get a little clunk when coasting to gas/gas to coasting. I had this somewhat before the TA though. Im getting my car looked at tomorrow because my pinion seal is leaking and I think its my TA's pinion angle is destroying my seal. Im going to try to get it to 0*. Im not sure what it is now... Did you find that the bolts on the diff through the TA were a little shorter than you wanted? They dont exceed the nuts completely. Bothers me a bit...

Man I hope this is a isolated incident. I'm getting ready to order mine in a few wks. w/ the rod end. Anyone else experiece this?
I may hold out and try Unbalanced Eng when theirs are done.
Hope you get it fixed and post what you did to correct it too.
Silas,

Silas,
The rod bolts don't fit all the way through. I'm going to order these http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/images/catbolt1-sm.html. They are 9/16"x8" long. Caterpillar seems to be the only one that has them. I have a 12bolt and I don't hear the diff noise like you.
Also, my pinion angle is set at -0.2

I also have a clunk with mine. The instructions say if you hear a clunking the end mount on the cross member needs greased. I greased teh living $&!% out of mine it still clunks. Trying to fix it on my to do list.

These are the two bolts that hold the mount to the rear axle housing.

The permissions are messed up on your image links.
Oh, found them. The first URL has a period stuck at the end, and the other 2 just dont seem to work. These do though:

Funny that you guys found the bolts on my torque arm page but missed the details on how I fixed my clunk:
The quick answer is make sure to tighen the bolts on the solid rod ends.
The reason the noise sounds like it's coming from the torque arm crossmember is because that's the only place it touches the the body; the noise is transmitted throught he arm.
The Caterpillar bolts are nice but I doubt the factory bolts are causing any clunking.
BTW, you can't just link to images my page from random places; my server checks the referer. Try these urls:
I heard a clunking sound from the rear end when making the transition from forward to reverse, reverse to forward or hard braking to launching. This was because I had failed to tighten the bolts that hold the solid rod ends to the differential housing mount. It turns out there was a little gap between the rod ends and the plates. I made some shims from a sheet of stainless steel and now it's much easier for me to properly tighten these bolts.

I do recall reading this in your install the first time. I thought I made sure I tightened them down. I think the one I missed is right below the front rod joint connection. Will check it out this weekend.
