Rear Sway Bar upgrade 19 to 21 (or higher)

Hi All,

I'm currently running the ST 35mm bar up front with the stock 19mm w/ poly bushings in the rear. I will also soon be installing my Koni SA's up front and Bilstein HD's out back.

My question in what changes will I see in my handling if I upgrade to a 21mm or larger rear bar? The car is mostly for daily driving with improved handling. What rear bar size is optimal for my setup?

Thank you in advance

I use a 35mm and a 21.5mm solid rear bar and like it. It will be a little easier to get the rear to step out but it's not bad. That's one reason I went with 120# springs in the rear, I like a little larger bar in the back.

I have an SLP 35mm front bar and Koni SA's with Ground Control coilovers and weight jackers, 500# front springs and 125# rears. I had a 21mm rear bar and dropped to the 19mm to reduce power oversteer at AutoX speeds. I like it much better.

More rear bar will cause the rear to step out quicker under throttle. Optimum is something you'll have to sort out for yourself as you can see by the opposing preferences bruecksteve and I have

That's what I was thinking. That particular bar is not as stiff as the 35mm solid bar, that's probably why you had to drop back to the 19mm rear. So we're probably about the same in terms of relative front to rear roll stiffness.

These two guys have told you the story. The 21/21.5 rear is aggressive, and can cause the rear to step out in certain circumstances, especially with stock (or 1LE) springs.

One of those circumstances is wet weather. For that reason alone, I'd stick with the 19 on a primarily street car.

Steve - what are your front springs?

Thanks everyone,

I am still running the stock springs, so I will stick with the 19mm rear. I appreciate all the feedback.

I'd suggest not putting the cart before the horse. The shocks will make an amazing difference in the way the car drives, as well tweaking the adjustments of the front shocks. Until you car truly assess the gains made by the shocks, and what you want to alter past that, I'd say stick with the 19mm rear bar. That certainly doesn't sell parts, but it's the right thing to do in terms of tuning the car.

You might very well find you are happy with the car. And if you want to go further, we'll have a better idea which way to proceed.
