Question Rack and Pinion probs

Hello all

I've had my car for a long time now and my steering feels kind of sloppy and its getting worse, i can move the steering wheel about an 1/8 of a turn to each side before the tires move, now i know it could be something else but is there an adjustment on our rack and pinion set ups that will allow you to tighten the steering up?

Thanks Mike

Make sure everything is tight. Then check the tie rods and ball joints for excess wear/play. If everything feels tight, it may just be that the alignment is slightly out and is giving it a "dead" feeling. (too much toe in can cause this, among other things).

Hope that helps.

I also have the same thing. In addition to what you said I get a clank clank coming from I think the rack when I turn left to right real quick. I'm getting it checked this next monday.

A lot of guys fix this problem by replacing the rag joint (rubber piece in the steering linkage). Unbalanced Engineering also sells a rag joint eliminator (aluminum disk) for about $30. I'll being installing one next weekend.

I just fixed the same problem with my car this morning by readjusting the steering rack preload. Its free and only takes 1 minute to do. Theres still a little bit of lag is the steering but nothing like there was before.
