New Shocks?

My 96 Z28 is totallly stock with 46,000 miles. I am replacing my original GSCs with new GSCs. I am wondering if now is a prudent time to replace my shocks. If I can obtain a better ride and possibly better handling it would be worth changing to a non-stock shock. If I really won't notice the difference for my normal highway driving purposes, I won't bother. I presume you need a wheel alignment after you replace shocks. Is this correct? Since I am aligning the car anyway, I figure it is a good time to thinks about the shocks. Any suggestions? When will I know that my shocks are worn out?

Is it too late to change your mind on choice of tires? I haven't heard anything good about them.
