Need better seats
Need better seats
I have started autocrossing my 96Z and am having a blast. I've concentrated most of my efforts on upgrading the suspension on my car and it is finally paying off. However, my stock seats (cloth) are showing the wear of 110k miles of daily driving and offer little in the way of support. I have to support myself on the shifter and the steering wheel and I think this is costing me time. I am ready to buy after-market seats to fix this.
My car is no longer a daily driver but I still want an adjustable seat comfortable enough for the occasional 1-2 hour cruise. I don't have a lot of headroom so I need a seat that sits at least as low as the stock seat. I need a seat that doesn’t look ridiculous in my neutral (tan) interior. I also want a seat that will work out with a good harness.
I've had a hard time finding much information on seats. None of the local guys have them in their f-bodies so I don't know what will fit. Please give me your opinions and suggestions on seats and where to purchase them.
Thanks,
JeffA

get a G-Force torso harness
http://www.racerwholesale.com/Mercha...ode=Restraints
it's at racerwholesale.com and called an autocross torso harness. someone here turned me on to it, God bless em, this thing is great. no more grabbing the parking brake for support in turns
i was using it on the stock seat and now using it on a corbeau forza. keeps you solid in the seat so you can keep both hands on the wheel.
BTW Corbeau forza is a good seat, slightly lower seat height than stock, but non-adj. the CR-1 is better as it is adj

I've seen these G-force harnesses and might try one. It just seems like a partial solution and doesn’t address upper body support. However the cost in comparison to new seats is attractive.

I'm trying the G-Force harness on Sunday for the first time on my stock seat. We'll see how it works.
I use to have a Corbeau seat in my old race car. I loved it. It is amazing what it means to have a seat with great support and some good belts. Like MrBigXL said, you can start to really focus on your driving and not worryabout holding yourself up in the seat. That's one of my next purchases after my Torsen T2R, my 3.73 gears, new headers and exhaust, my..............

I couldn't stand the stock seats (for the Camaro). I dont know how that headrest is even legal. If I had gotten rearended or hit something backwards at speed, the top of the headrest would hit at about my second vertebrae and snap my neck. At least the firebird had adjustable headrests (as did all the camaros that were exports because the seats weren't legal elsewhere).
I got Sparco Evo2s. The do sit a bit higher than stock seats, so I had them mount the slider (to adjust forwards and back) to the floor and use spacers for the rear so it was level. I still need to run w/ my T-Tops off when I wear my helmet, but that was the case w/ stock seats too. The Evo2s are pretty nice but a bit pricey. The foam in them makes all the difference. I've talked to people that had Corbeau and they wished they spend the extra money because the padding completely compressed and some even had a bump near their tailbone in the seat??? Im 6'2" and about a 35" waist, and the Evo2 is the right width, if your over, say, 38" or so then the Evo3 is probably a better choice, but I dont know how well those will fit being as wide as they are. The regular Evos are fine till about 32" or so (little Italians
) If you can try to find a place where you can actually sit in them first. I almost orderd Recaros and Im glad I didnt (the leg bolsters would be in my thighs... again, made for little people).
I run an Autopower 4 point rollbar and a sparco 5 point harness. I fed the stock belt through the seat for daily use as well. it changes the angle a little bit so the side of the belt might rub your neck a bit more. Im going to get one of those seatbelt pad thingys soon for it. For autocrossing, I find I never use the shoulder belts because I want to lean forward to see around 180* sweepers and stuff, so I tighten the lap belts very tight and then I wear the stock belt, pull it tight, undo it and put 2 twists in the belt and reconnect it so it can come loose. The seat really holds you in well. I rarely use the dead pedal (more out of habbit). Let me know if you have any questions about them. The seats I have were $560 for the seat, then you need to get the brackets (they're side brackets for this seat), and the slider that they attach too. I junked the floor bracket that the slider goes on. My eyes are at the door handle hight on most SUVs now. I got mine at OG Racing, mainly because they are near by and I can try them all out there, but they are really a national distributer.

They seem to favor Porsches so Im not sure if anyone there will have and F-Body knowledge.

Thanks for the excellent reply auto-Xer. I wish I had some decent speed shops around here to try out some seats. This is the main reason I haven’t purchased one yet. I'm worried that I would spend a lot of cash then not fit or like the seat.

my firebird cloth seats didn't work so well for me. i was always falling out of the seat. So i got a recaro SRD. it's adjustable and is a great seat for the daily driver as well as the weekend racer.

i'm actually selling one black one for $400 if you are interested.
