Home Depot Brand Subframe Connectors

Anyone gone to Home Depot and gotten a bunch of tubular steel rods, taken them to a muffler shop and had them fit and weld the rods up to your camaro/transam ?

If so, how well did it work/not worK?

thanks!

I suppose it could work, but I can't imagine it would be cheaper than buying a set for $100...

The only way I can think it would be cheaper to custom-fab them is if you can do it all yourself. Engineering, cutting, fitting, welding. And cheaper is only if you charge yourself a $0.xx labor rate.

But if you insist, or wish to do it up in some slightly different way than any aftermarket supplier has to date, go to a steel shop that will deal in small quantities. You will get a much wider variety of tubing sizes and thicknesses, not to mention a better price. Been down this road, sort of . . .

Tube and sheet metal stock isn't all that cheap, when your only buying small amounts, so it would not likely save you very much, plus then you have to do it right.

If you buy all boxed metal stock, it will probably be easier to put together.

I would make sure the stuff you buy form home depot is also as sturdy and as thick as any subframes you buy.
