I ahve read about different rear axle bump stops, and a different sized one for 17s, are they really needed?

Also what tire do you reccomend, I am trying to avoid wheel gap...

275/40/17 ?

All you need to do is bolt them on. For some reason SLP put spacers under the bump stops on their cars, but I have been running without them for a long time with 17x9 and 17x11 wheels.

Changing to 17x9's is not going to close any wheel gap as the suggested tire is 275/40/17, which is the same height as the stock 245/50/16. You will need to lower the car with springs to change the wheel gap.

You say that like it is a bad thing. My car has gotten faster in the turns with each increase in unspring weight (from stock 16x8 to 17x9 to 17x11).

Taken by itself, unsprung weight is always a bad thing. Bumps upset the car more. It's why our live axle is a disadvantage.

What compensates for that is better tires, in several ways. I'll bet your car went around corners faster mostly because you got stickier tires when you changed wheel size. Some because the shorter sidewalls were stiffer. And a little because you had wider tires.

Actually I took a step down in tire from a 275 Victoracer to a 315 Nitto drag radial, but 17's, and both the same overall height (and sidewall height).

My 17x11's (24lbs) weight 4.5lbs more than my stock 16x8 wheels (19.5lbs) did. Throw a 315 Hoosier into the mix (25.5lbs) (I don't know what the stock tires weigh, but probably close to that) and I'll take the few extra pounds of unsprung weight ANY day!!!!!

That's because it is a bad thing Maybe you got faster because you went to a wider tire

But everything is a trade-off. Unless you spend an enormous amount of money to get extremely ligh wheels, you're going to see a weight increase when going to wider wheels. But that doesn't mean that the increased weight isn't offset by the much higher cornering forces. That's much like the discussion we've had up here about the weight of the 35mm front bar, yes it weighs 15lbs heavier than the stock bar, but for most of us (see how I said that Mike! ) the weight disadvantage is far offset by the much improved handling characteristics. Now I'm sure if someone made a titanium 40mm front bar for $100 we'd all be happy!!!!
