4WD better for Auto X?

I was hoping to get a 4WD car for AutoX. Isn't Chevy supposed to be making some small 4WD car?

The only car that GM is currently selling with AWD is a low power version of the Pontiac Vibe.

The STI and Evo, even the regular WRX are major weapons in autocross. They do have weak points; relatively narrow tires, major front-end push entering turns and about 25%+ loss in the drive-train. Where they shine are on very tight or slick courses and when exiting a turn they can put down power earlier and more of it. Also be careful with AWD it is real easy to smoke the clutch, I watched them do it repeatedly this summer.

Thanks for the feedback, I was wondering about getting a WRX STi for a winter vehicle, but I know that if I get one that I'll turn it into an AutoX car. I know you can't just dump the clutch in AWD you have to feather it out of the hole; any other pointers?

I just ran a statistical study on this very question (in the topic). I was actually trying to compare RWD to FWD in different geographical regions, figuring cramped lots lead to FWD having more of an advantage.

However, RWD had a clear advantage. Between AWD or RWD, however, neither had an advantage at a 95% confidence level.

So if you're purchasing it to autocross...just go with what you are most comfortable driving. Don't get an AWD car to make up for driver skill However, if you need to get one anyway...well...my housemates WRX is very nice, and I'd recommend it.

It's not just for autoXing, if that was the case I'd throw a a ton of mods at my V6 maro. I'm looking for a nice winter vehicle; snow and all, so that's why I was thinking WRX STi.

You might want to take a look a the Forester XT. 2.5 Turbo, 210 HP and 235 TQ, WRX driveline and 1.5 inches more ground clearance.

The Imperezza has 300hp/300ftlb/tq off the lot. I'm not really into SUVs or Trucks anyways. Thanks for the feedback though.
