17x9 or 17x11

I know eveyone loves their 17x11's on all 4 for autox, but what if I can find a good deal on 17x9 in front and 17x11 in back? How bad is this for autox purposes? Would I be better to just stick with 17x9 all around?

If you go with 11" in the rear with 9"'s in the front, you'll end up with a little more understeer since the rear will now have better grip. More than anything you'll have to adjust your driving style to compensate. I would use 17x11's all around but use a 275 or 285 on the front and 315's on the rear. You'll have less clearance problems that way. I'm considering 17x11's all around for my street tires.

So would you say, given only these 2 options, which is better: 9's all around or 9's in front 11's in rear? Or option 3 - just suck it up and buy the 11's

Option 3. You'll never look back.

Wouldnt the tires be a little stretched looking with 275 or 285 on front? Anyone have any pics of this, I would just like to see how they fit? 285/40R17's are also a taller tire than 275/40R17 or 315/35R17, so wouldn't that throw the car off a little as well, taller tires on front than the rear?

The max design rim width for a 275 is 11". So yes, they will be stretched, but they are designed to fit an 11" rim. I don't have a picture but I have seen them and it looks great.

As far as being taller, it's not a noticeable difference, about .3" difference between a 275 and 285. You'd never notice it on the car.

Keep in mind too that a 275's minimum rim size is a 9" usually, some are even 9.5". So personally, I'd rather fit one on a 11" then a 9"

11 all the way around. and forget about the little 275's
go for 315 up front and 335 out back

totally insane

goodyear sells both tires
315 = original equipment on Mclaren F1
335 = original equipment on Ferrarri F50

if those cars get traction with those tires i know i can get it with mine at 1/2 - 1/3 the power

thats what i want. i just need to find some good looking 17X11 rims

You really need a 12" rim on the rear to properly support a 335 tire. A 315 tire on the rear works just great. I'd stick with that unless you want to add some small flares to make 12" wheels work, and spend the money on the custom wheels instead of the very affordable AFS 11" wheels on ebay.

335's are too large for an 11" wheel in the rear of F-Body's, especially on the street. I use 315 Hoosiers on 11" wheels all the way around, but mine will scrape on extremely hard turns, 335's will scrape. Most 335's have a design wheel width of 12"-13" anyway.

AFS 11 inch on EBay

I checked out the available options on EBay for the AFS brand. There are sevreal styles to choose from, however, they provide only 11's for the rear and 9's for the front. Any available auctions for four 11's??

Steve

Steve, if you look often enough you'll find auctions for 2 of 17x11 wheels. Pair up 2 of those auctions and you have your wheels. That's how I did it. I now have 4 of 17x11 and 4 of 17x9.5 AFS black spoke wheels.

My car is lowered also. You might need to roll the rear fender lip up but that's about it. It will take some minor pounding on the inner wheel wheel in the rear, maybe a little tweaking in the front but none of it is major. It really comes down to which (or who's) 315's you buy. I had a post up here not long ago that listed some of the dimensions for different manufacturers 315's. They all vary in size, some a lot more than others. In other words, some fit better than others. My Hoosier's (which you wouldn't use on the street anyway) are larger than most and I don't have any major problems with fitment, at least none that I couldn't fix if I wasn't too lazy to do it. If I decide to go with 11"s for the street, I could probably spend and hour or two and all of the issues would go away.

Since you have a '95 TA, here's some pictures of my '94 Formula with 36mm offset AFS wheels and Kumhos. The work I did was similar to what Steve describes above. With a 36mm offset, I think they look great.

The pictures also show -2 camber on the front. I had taken out about 400 lbs. from the car when I took the shots and hadn't readjusted my coilovers so it sat a little higher than it does now.

Here are some pictures of the car at race ride height.
