window tint DIY
window tint DIY
Hello everyone. I saw a diy kit with approx. a 30% tint. There was a plastic applicator like a spatula, and a cutter blade provided as well. The pack is printed in French so there's nothing that I can make out about the product (so I didnt buy it). What I like to know is, do these tints come with glue already on them?, and secondly how do I go about cutting it to size and applying it?
I was'nt good in geometry so i will definitely screw it up trying to cut it to the correct shape of my Z's glasses.

Re: window tint DIY
Having tried it myself before, I would tell you practice makes perfect. I would never do it again, as it takes a lot of experience, creates a mess and you have to keep it all very wet. The guys that do it every day, make it look easy, but it's tough to keep the bubbles out and not crease the film and not cut it wrong. I think Gila sells precut tint so you may want to check that out as it may make it easier

Thanks guys. And you know what, since that DIY kit just costs $3.70 I think I'll give it a shot (as something to do for the weekend). I'll let you know how it turns out. Meanwhile wish me luck :-)
Re: window tint DIY
Someone asked this a while ago and got some good replies, might try a search. Anyway the tint has water activated glue on one side. Cut the tint over size (dry) and trim after it's been installed. Remove the door panel and extend the tint under the inner seal, so it wont catch when you roll the window down. On the top and rear edge trim back about an 1/8th of an inch for the same reason. If you have a big piece of plastic, glass, or anything that's really smooth. You can spray it with water lay the tint on it, glue side UP, while you cut to shape. When your ready, you can spray the glue side and transfer to the window. Keep every thing wet while you move the tint around. Squeegee out the bubbles and let dry. A heat gun will help expand the tint at difficult curved surfaces. The easiest way to do the back is to cut strips of tint and over lap them, not the best looking though.
Good Luck

Re: window tint DIY
I tried doing it myself. 2-3 times actually. Even with precut tint. And this wonderful resource; http://www.tintdude.com/
And I still failed.
But I don't feel bad as it took 2 different installers to get me tinted. The first one failed and gave up after about 10 tries and 4 hours of labor.

I worked as a tintman's helper for a while and let me tell you this before you start.
F-BODYS tint needs to be heatshrinked before it is applied! Its HARD! you have to know how much to heat it up or else you will burn the paper
