Whats up with the pointy spikes on the headlamps?

Is anyone else annoyed by the pointy spikes on the headlamps? I hate them because everytime I wash my car, my sponge gets tears when I wash over them. But what really angered me recently enough to make a thread about it was because twice already I am driving and a freaking bag that happens to be flying through traffic gets jammed on my headlamps as I drive because of those spikes. One day I was driving on the freeway and a orange freeway bag was flying and it hit the front of my car, got stuck on my headlamp spike, and it annoyed the crap out of me. I drove for around 30 minutes with that thing flapping while people just stared. I was so embarrassed. I couldn't just pull over and take that thing off, I was running late as it is.

I really like the way the front end looks on LS1 better than the LT1, but why did they make those stupid spikes? I'm thinking about sanding them off.

Any good ideas on how to sand them off without making bad scratches?

pretty sure those are points to mount headlight adjusters so you can make sure theyre level...but, unless you have that piece, theyre useless...

They are part of the mold GM uses(used) - I was told it is easier to release them using this method....and for the obvious reason of saving precious $$, the "spikes" were left on,

--Could be wrong here, but during my T-top conversion w/ my brother we had this same conversation (he is an architect who specializes in making/designing crazy/unique furnatue) he uses all sorts of materials, so im sure he knew what he was talking about.
