Post Time For New Tires, Please Help!

Yep, it's that time again. The Pilot XGT Z4's are down to the wear bars finally, after getting almost 45,000 miles out of them (not a typo, they were put on at 28,000 miles and the car has 73,000 now). They're not bald yet, but the car is not very stable in the rain.

Anyway, I've still got the stock 16x8 rims so the size I'm looking for is the standard 245 50 Z16.

I'm looking for suggestions for tires that provide good dry and wet grip. We do get our share of rain here in Houston, so wet traction is important. And I don't race the car, so ultimate dry traction is not necessary.

I don't think I want to go back to the Pilot XGT Z4's again, for two reasons: I want to try something else, and they're currently $200+ a tire. The max I'm looking to pay per tire is about $150 (plus mounting, shipping, valve stems, lifetime balance, certificates, etc.)

Right now I like the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712, Pirelli P7000 SS, Yokohama AVS ES100, Yokohama AVS dB, BFG g-Force T/A KDW, Dunlop SP Sport 9000, and Bridgestone Potenza RE730 Gen 2.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Also, if you have any firsthand experience with any of these tires, please post that as well.

Thumbs up

I've got the RE730's. Great tire, wet, dry, whatever. When I get some 17x9.5 rims, I'm getting the same tires in 285's.

Remember...you get what you pay for. I have Dunlop Sp SPort 5000s, Z rate, all season. I have a lot of confidence in them when I drive in the rain. I believe I got mine for $105 each from tirerack.com, but that was a while ago. You could probably get them for under/around $150 each including shipping and local mounting/balancing.

I had the RE730's on my factory wheels and loved them. The wet and dry traction was great.

I had a set of firehawk sz50's and they were really pretty good all around tires, but kinda expensive at 160-180 a tire. Last week I just got yokohamas (I don't remember the name, but in the stock size) and it seems they grip a little less than the sz50s. But also, they were only 115 or so. Haven't gotten a chance to test them in the rain yet.

I've got the Nitto 555 series tires. They have AWESOME dry traction, and from everything I've heard great wet traction as well, I don't know because my car never sees the rain. They're not too badly priced either. I paid $165 per tire, but that was for 275-40ZR/17s, not the 255 16s.

I use the BF Goodwich KDWS (same as KDW, with a wishful thinking towards snow). I'm actually really happy with them - they grip ALMOST as well as my SZ50s did, at roughly half the price. They also ride better.

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up getting the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's. Total cost at Discount Tire was $532.30. That includes their road hazard certificates, lifetime balancing & rubber valves, and disposal of the old tires.

Does this seem like a good deal to you all?
