I'm referring to the plate which sits on top of the TB. The ones where you can replace it with something like SS, Z28 etc written on it.

There is an open "chamber" under the TB top cover plate. That chamber connects 1) the port on the side of the TB that supplies clean/metered air to the PCV system, via the hose from the TB to the passenger side valve cover, and 2) the opening in front of the throttle blades that supplies that clean metered air.

If you remove the cover plate, you will open up the chamber, and allow unfiltered, unmetered air to enter the TB, and to enter the crankcase system..... in effect, it throws things pretty much out of whack, because the system (via the MAF sensor) no longer has any idea how much air is entering the combustion chambers. 93 speed-density systems would not have the air measurement problem, but you would still be admitting unfiltered air to the engine.

It'd look very sh!tty without that cover on there. It's plastic so you'd maybe save an ounce of weight with it off.
