Spohn Roll Cages

Does anyone know if the Spohn roll cages are weld-in or bolt-in ? I went to there site and all they say is that they meet and exceed NHRA and IHRA requirements. Anyone have this cage or any info on it ? Thanks guys!!

From the Spohn online catalog:
S&W Race Cars' 1-3/4" x .134" wall mild steel roll bars are precision bent for each particular body style and feature notched tube ends (where applicable) for ease of installation. Roll bars are designed to increase chassis stiffness and protect the driver in the event of a crash. The kit includes a main hoop, rear braces, side bars, frame supports, seat crossmember and steel mounting plates. **This is a weld-in kit**

You also have the option of choosing a swing out side bar kit. This hinges the side bar to allow easy entrance and exit from the vehicle. They are priced per side, and they meet NHRA requirements.
Note that this is an 8-point roll bar not a "cage". The cage is what you require only when you run under 10.00 in NHRA.

This is not a "Spohn" product. He is selling the S&W kits. They are NOT an assembled roll bar. They are the loose pieces that you need to ASSEMBLE into a full roll bar (or roll cage). There is cutting involved, and each part of the braces and hoop need to be welded together. Then the assembly needs to be mounted in the car, requiring welding at all 8 point for the roll bar (you can leave the diagonal brace at the base of the hoop off, since they are not required by NHRA. And technically, NHRA does not even require the passenger side front brace on a roll bar).

If the "steel mounting plates" described in the writeup are at least 6"x6" square, you can make a matching plate for under the car, and use bolts to sandwich the plates around the floor. That is permitted by NHRA for car without independant, full frames.

I suspect Wolfe Race Craft would build you a white powdercoated bar. However, putting a fully assembled roll bar into a coupe is not easy. You might need to install the hoop, and then weld in the braces, making "powder coating" impossible. My roll bar is "painted" and there really is no problem with using paint. There are no significant scratches or chips in it after 3 years. Painting allows you to install, then touch up the welds. The guy that did mine used some medium gray spray cans that closely matched the interior, and gave me the leftovers for touchup.

Mine is chrome moly, which runs the cost up, but saves about 1/3 of the weight. Figure maybe $1,000-1,200 for a setup like that, and that would require you to do some of the interior removal and reinstall. I had a couple extra things added, like the X-brace on the back braces, swingout sidebars, mounting tabs for the harness, and a brace for the seatback. Everything was installed so that in the future it could be converted to a certified cage. The work also included custom chrome moly SFC's, and having the hoop and front braces mounted to the floor and through into the subframes.
