so i messed up my engine bay paint job

how do i fix this? here the scenario i painted my engine with 2 coats of self etching primer and then 2 coats off black rust oleum. and 2 coats of clear it looked great! well when i was moving stuff around i scratched the clear! so i sprayed another coat of clear over the whole right side and it cracked! so now im freaking out and i have no idea how to fix this!

Did you use the same brand of clear as the first time? Often different brands will give a bad reaction, involving pealing and cracking.

when you paint you are supposed to re coat within a few hours or you have to wait a few days sometimes longer. The paint is curing and all the solvent havent released yet, this will cause the cracking.

I would wait a week or so, then sand the surface smooth, and re-clear.

It wont mess up the black, unless you sand too deep. I would use a rough enough grit to remove the material, but not so rough that the clear wont fill the scratches. Sorry I cant give an exact number. Ill go look at the pics too.

That might have disturbed the layers deep. Best thing is let it fully cure before messing with it, then sand till smooth and paint over it.

I just had this happen with some rust-oleum, I put the industrial paint over the regular primer. I had to go to bare metal to clean up the mess.

you might as well forget about fixing it, you really cant sand it. just forget about it and let it be, it's not worth trying to fix on an engine, the more paint you put on it the hotter the engine is going to run anyway.
