Shaving Doors, Antenna, Trunk questions
Shaving Doors, Antenna, Trunk questions
Okay, so I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but i want to shave my door handles, antenna (I don't use it anyway, it's not even hooked up), trunk key hole, and possibly the CAMARO letters on the back. Now, my question, I know to properly "shave" car parts, you need to cut a piece of steel to fit the part your shaving, sand the paint around piece to bare metal, weld steel in, contour it to the body so it's perfect, then get it painted and all that stuff...or at least i think that's all right. But I know some people, skip that whole process and just use bondo to do that, then sand it down to contour with the body and then get it painted...is that bad for the car? is there any down side to doing it that way? does it chip in certain temperatures? does the paint chip easier? is it harder to work with than the steel? Will it cause the paint to fade after awhile? Is it easy to break/harder to clean? Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Re: Shaving Doors, Antenna, Trunk questions
I heard the door can be a PITA with cracking, since they are some special plastic. I shaved the rear Camaro, and lock and the antenna. The rear piece is easy since it's only fiberglass. I bondod it. I used some putty epoxy to fill the lock hole.
For the antenna, I fiberglassed the hole up. Then used some bondo to level everything out and then resprayed. Came out pretty good. I haven't had any problems with chipping or peeling. It's been over a year now in the Texas heat.
I say go for it.

Re: Shaving Doors, Antenna, Trunk questions
Good luck....The antenna is easy because you can just weld, cut, bondo and paint. It's steel (quarter panel). The doors are the biggest problem. They are SMC plastic/fiberglass which expands and contracts at different rates than anything you will use (smc, fiberglass, whatever) to shave the handles. Do not try to use steel obviously. We have tried about 5 or 6 different combinations and they never are perfect. I have had one door crack as well. But each time we fixed it and it has gotten better, but will never be perfect unfortunately. The back area on the trunk shaved nicely and have not had one problem with it, but when we shaved the license plate hole and the side markers off the bumper it does the same thing as the doors, but not as bad. I have only seen a few others done and none of them were any good. I would recommend not doing it, unless you are dead set on it. I was because my car is a show car, but it's your call!!
