Re: Shave antenna?

I think the problem is that no one can imagine a gromit being flush to an exterior panel. When I think of gromit, I think of something that has a lip all the way around it that the edge of the hole fits in, which would then create a bump where the antenna is... and hence not be flush. Do you have any pics so we can see what exactly you're talking about?

Re: Shave antenna?

Ok, this it what i did, Took that gromet out, put in a metal piece behind it and flled the little gap that was left with some bondo. I would've prefered no bondo because i don't like the stuff much but i dont have welding tools so i had to make due. I then painted the entire panel.

This is a picture of it, I still gotta clean overspray and wetsand/buff the panel to shine it up but you get the idea:

So are you saying you "glued" the piece of metal in place with bondo/filler instead of welding it? If so thats not gonna last.

Here's the one I'm going to get around to ordering soon. My three favorite stations still come in fine without any antenna, so I've yet to bother to get it.

Re: Shave antenna?

I think it will hold fine and if it doesnt, ill just recut the hole carefully and put the antenna back in there. Finished pics will be in real soon. I just laid the long antenna in the trunk area sideways under the carpeting. I get reception on all the channels in my area (my old shorty didnt even do thhis). so basically it is free and i didnt neeed anything.

Ouch, I didn't realize exactly what you did until the other guy said that... gluing the metal piece on with bondo wasn't good at all. I had bondo'd the nose of my car when it was all ****ted up, and the second anything even put any pressure on it, the bondo (being that bondo is very brittle) cracked right off.

Re: Shave antenna?

You are correct there is a small ridge 1/8 - 3/16" tall around the antenna. The center of the gromet is recessed so the retaining nut is even with the body. Its flush enough for me and it looks factory.

I'll post pictures if I get a chance.

PLEASE DO!

I'm really struggling to understand what you did and how you did it.
Maybe it's just me having trouble, but a couple nice close-up pictures would sure be helpful!

Red face Re: Shave antenna?

I have a picture.

I will e-mail it or if someone wants to host it I will send it to them. I use to have a page on fbody.com, but it expired because I was not keeping it up.

Try mustangmods.com. I know its a mustang site but it allows you to put pics up on the net for free.

Re: Shave antenna?

Or upload it to Image Shack yourself.

It's very easy.
Click the link, click "browse" and explore to your file. Click upload and then post the link it gives you when it's done uploading. EZ.
