Hi Mike, wire brush all the rust and crap off and use VHT rollbar paint. It's satin black and is pretty tuff stuff.

...thanks Steve..how ya doing my friend? Enjoying the weather
in Portland..
Alot of guys use Por-15 http://www.por-15.com/ .Its really tuff stuff from what I hear and it will last forever. I just bought some semi-gloss black to paint my rear end. I've been told that the amount that comes in the started kit is enough to do the rear end plus more. The starter kit also comes with stuff to clean up rusty areas (like our rear ends) before painting to help it bond better. So that is what I bought, I hope its enough. Hope this helps.

I did a quick test to see how it bonds to a rusted area and a area that was prepped.... It actually stuck better and harder to the non-prepped rusted peice. Now I just need to apply to my car once its warm out
.
.
When I first got my car I took it to the dealer because of the rear end being totally covered in rust. They told me that it was unpainted because they found that if they painted them they tended to overheat.

...I hardly think so...
another vote for por 15, that stuff works great, it is kinda hard to paint with cause its so think, and the starter kit should do the trick, you'll just have to spread it around. I put it on some old metal then twisted and bent it and the stuff still stuck so it is very pliable. The only problem I've had is when I had some left over in the can it hardened up on me. this happened twice, so I would do the whole rear at once on the same day just in case.
