Most people upgrade to the more attractive smooth grille insert anyway... That's what I'd do.

Or take the black plastic insert out completely, leaving the painted part exposed underneath. Of course there are some holes to fill that way, (or you just buy the cover that keeps the same look, but covers the holes).
