removed sidemoldings? got pics?
I would like to see some pics of 4th gen LT1 camaros with the side moldings removed. I've bee thinking of doing it to my Purple Pearl Metalic Z ever since I got it.
Thanks guys,
John
PS: Anyone know where I can get Purple Pearl Metalic (only offered in '93-'94) OEM paint? I've got a friend who works at a GM dealer and he says they no longer offer it in the 5 oz. touch up spray can or the 1 oz. paint pen. PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks guys,
John

Re: removed sidemoldings? got pics?
Removed them on my 96. I think it cleaned up the look alot. Very easy..took me 5-10min to remove both sides, about 20min to remove the adhesive and buff it out.
Re: removed sidemoldings? got pics?
Removed them on my 80,000 mile LT1, thats black, and there was no fading.
Some pics here... did not want to repost them...

Re: removed sidemoldings? got pics?
wow they really look better without the moldings!
mine will for sure be coming off just as soon as the rain blows by me here in KY.
thanks for the quick pics guys, nice rides!
what's the recommended removing method? Just peel them right up or do you have to finess it a little? Also, what was used to get the adhesive up? Goo-Gone? I've got like 5 cans of Turtle Wax polishing compound that I generally use on stuff like that, think it'll work?

Bug and tar remover, WD-40, Goo gone, and alot of elbow work. Also use a heat gun or a hair dryer to soften up the glue before removal of the mouldings. Be careful not to melt the paint though. You can use fishing line between the side mouldings and the car to lift it off, or carefully use a razor blade, I think i just pulled mine off. I removed the side mouding a few days before i got it repainted so i wasnt really careful with the paint anyways. Here is a pic of mine.

For paint, I've bought spray cans of PPM from Automotivetouchup.com twice and been happy with the results. Others have also suggested finding your local automotive Sherwin Williams center. They should be able to ix it and bottle (or can) it for you too.
Re: removed sidemoldings? got pics?
I used regular ole fish line to remove the molding about 6", then the molding will just come off when you peel it off. There was tape left on the paint after the molding was removed, and thet best way it came off for me was to start on one end and then with my fingers I would rub it horizontally until it all came off. I had a few trouble spots that I was getting frustrated, but at that point I soaked it goo gone and it gave me a reason to chug another beer. After it was all said and done, 10 empty beer bottles were scattered throughout the garage.
Re: removed sidemoldings? got pics?
Man after all the photos and advice, I am going to have to do the same thing. Last nite it was the 383 emblems...which I have left over fishing line and goo gone, so tonite *should* be a breeze. Only thing stopping me was the fear of what the paint looked like underneath...On the way home I'll get a case of beer and take scrmnws6's advice! I'll post up late tonite the finished product.

A promise is a promise, and it only took 5 beers and some sore thumbs...heh
Before: I apologize to all who saw this in the other post but it made the best 'before' picture for comparison reasons.

After:

I didn't get it completely clean but its good enough for tonite.
Good Luck JSKeet
